Ember shuddered slightly, but made herself calm to listen to the wise words that she would need to remember. She let out a small sigh of relief, relaxing the slightest. "It all sounds so... complicated. Wild." the she gave a short dry laugh at herself. "What am I saying, we are out in the wild. Of course it's untamed." She said with a shake of her mane, then adding in a truly relieved tone "It's good he is your friend then.. but how will we know when stallions are looking to... expand.. and when they aren't?" she asked, a slight frown appearing on her brow.

Looking over at Ember, Tempest nods, just a little bit. "It can be, sometimes. We do have it much easier, without humans telling us what to do, or putting that junk on our bodies. But we are not without our twisting pathways of life. But you are here to learn, so that you can live your best life, out here. Being wild and untame....is very rewarding. When a stallion looks to expand, they are not subtle about it, they let you know. The thing about living out here.....is everything is obvious. There are no guessing games out here, and a stallion will always be clear, whenever he wants something. I'm sure, that if it came down to survival, Neptune, without a doubt, would put his herd before our friendship, because out here, that is what stallions have to do....protect their brood. That's the most important thing," He says.

Ember flattened her ears and nodded in agreement, and finding herself marveling at just how much this stallion knew. No matter how many questions he had, he always had an honest and yet somehow comforting answer! "Well at least that... I suppose... i'll just have to learn the signs" she said, then frowned slightly at the thought that friendship did not affect this. "I suppose that makes sense.. but does it not seem.. I don't know... barbaric at all?" she asked hesitantly.

"I'll teach you those signs. Most are obvious, the moment that stallions open their mouths. They can overt, abrasive, and a bit self-serving. We are to survive, like any creature, and living to the point, that we can pass on our strengths, to the next generation. That is the fundamental truth of the world that we live in. Every horse you see, has one goal in mind, or has had it in the past......live long enough to have foals, to ensure the survival of our species. Even the much older ones, like Cloud, had that mindset. It gets a bit different, as a horse gets older, mainly for the stallions. Mares usually have a guaranteed safety in life. There is just always a risk, when it comes to stallions. Now, wild mares aren't defenseless. Most stallions will take their shot at a mare, but I have seen plenty of mares, put up enough of a fight, that the stallion gives up. As persistent as they are, the more you fight back, the less effort they'll put in. A kick or bite from a mare, can mean a serious injury for a stallion, and a stallion can't show weakness, especially if they want to preserve their herd," Tempest says,"

Once again Ember could feel her face flushing at the thought of the question she had asked, but Tempest didn't seem at all unsettled by it, answering her calmly and honestly. "I suppose I can understand that... it might just take some time. I never really thought about what the goal of any wild horses would be, besides just living life. But preserving the species does make sense" she said, although she couldn't help but grimace slightly at the idea. It was foreign to her. She knew that in captivity they were made to breed to whomever the humans chose, but somehow it had been an acceptable way of life there. Here she supposed it was the same for the wild horses, this was their way of life and had been forever. And of course it had to be. Survival was important, especially of the species. At Tempest mention of fighting an uneasy feeling took root in her chest. "I don't know if I could fight like that" she said uncertainly, especially as she considered her wounded leg. She'd like to think she could take care of herself one day, but if Tempest was any proof of as stallions strength and size, then she really did not feel positive about her odds against one.

"When you're out here, survival is key. When you know that you are able to do that, that is when the other horses around here, feel comfortable and confident enough to push for survival of the species. You can only contribute to your own kind, when you know that you can make it out here. Not just to ensure that you find a strong partner to raise foals with, but to be able to teach your offspring, the secrets and tools to survival. But we won't be worrying about what you can teach, just yet. You still have plenty to learn and you never know what stallion will catch your eye. Stallions in a herd, usually are the ones that most mares don't really like, because they can become obsessed with control. But the stallions who have lived on their own for a while, even if they don't have a steady herd, can sometimes be more reliable, because their responsibilities are significantly decreased, because they have to take care of themselves," Tempest says. "As for fighting, most of the time, a stallion will do it for you, but there are some mares out there, that are not underestimated. I will bring you to some of the older mares, who have known this land for a long time. They'll teach you how to handle yourself. Your hooves are your best friend, and they can bring down mountain lions, and scare off even some of the most persistent of stallions," He says.

Ember wasn't totally comfortable with the topic, but she knew it was important to learn all Tempest had to teach her. "That does make sense" she said after a moment, then snorted at herself "It would certainly be a while before i'd be able to teach any foal how to survive out here" she said with a shake of her head. At his mention of a stallion catching her eye, she glanced over at him, then away. A stallion catching her eye? She didn't know if that could ever happen. How could she feel safer with any other stallion than she already did with Tempest? He was honorable brave, and wise to the ways of surviving. And did he not realize that he was describing himself when he spoke of the reliable stallion living on his own? The thought was strangely unsteadying, although she didn't know why. But Tempest had already moved on, and she let her mind move on to the topic he was speaking of. It seemed a much safer one strangely. "I would like to be able to fight for myself if necessary" she said slowly, then glanced at her strained leg "Im not sure if I'd be the best candidate though. No matter how I fought, I'd probably have to fight on three to two legs, and any way you look at it one of them is much weaker than the others" she said with a frown.

Looking at Ember, Tempest shakes his head. "Any adult horse can fight. It's in our blood. If you are unsure of yourself, I can either teach you, or I can bring you to a mare, who would be able to teach you. Stallions and mares fight differently, unless the attacker is an animal or a human. All horses kick, we use the strength in our legs and hooves, to protect us. But sometimes, our teeth can send a very serious message to those who attack us. There are ways to shake a predator, like a mountain lion from our backs, with minimal damage to ourselves. I will be sure to help you learn how to fight, since that is very necessary." He says. He would leave the idea of how to find a mate, up to Ember. For now, it was probably much too early for her to even consider that, because survival, itself, was more of a priority. She couldn't even think about that type of future, when she still needed to learn the land, how to navigate it, how to find the best food and water sources, and how to defend herself. He wasn't going to go out of his way, to find danger, but he would still help her learn about how to deal with it. And they would probably be traveling together, for a while, to help her get her footing, so there was plenty of time for her to learn.
