Twilight shook her head "They won't sis, i know they won't. We'll be sure they don't. All of us will keep him safe" She said firmly, then her eyes softened "Oh sis, you aren't!! You are worried, that is normal and ok. But i promise you that we will not let anything happen to him" she promised.

Spirit lifted his head, eyes softening as the mare nuzzled him. His life, to say the least, had been one of turmoil and struggles, of ups and downs like none other... but so had hers. The past few months together had made everything from their troubled times melt away. He knew better than to relax his guard even with their time of ease they'd been having though. At his mates words he turned his gaze to the plains a slight frown appearing on his face as he stood motionless for a few moments. Then he gave a slight shake of his mane, turning back to his mate "It could be anything from a new foal to the death of an elder. Much as we would like to know, it is certainly best for us to keep our distance." he said firmly, then pressed his muzzle to hers briefly. "I've learned to not let curiosity control my actions" he added quietly, another time where his curiosity led him to travel far from his herd resurfacing in his memories.

Midnight nodded. "I hope you're right" She whispered to her sister as Twilight shifted closer to her. Midnight nuzzled her briefly. "Look at him...how could another mare not want him..?" She suddenly asked. "He's....he's the perfect little colt anyone could have, and I was blessed with him." She said.

Rain nodded. "I know" She whispered. "I'm right here my love." She whispered again. "I'm not going anywhere, you know I'm here. Through thick and thin, the light of your life. I promise. I will never abandon you" She said, as she lay down with her mate on the grass. "I do hope everything is alright though" She finally admitted.

Twilight moved closer to nuzzle her. "He is" she agreed softly, then nuzzled her "But no other mare shall have him" she promised again.


Spirit smiled slightly and nuzzled her briefly once again as he lay down "And you know how deep my love is for you" he replied, his amber eyes intense upon her blue gaze. He would do anything to be sure she, and the rest of the herd, remained safe forever. As she settled down, he glanced back over the plains, and a moment later her words echoed his own thoughts. He gave a reluctant agreeing nicker "I do as well. If they remain unmoving much longer i may attempt to speak with the lead stallion. If there is something wrong in the land, we must know of it" he said seriously. After a few moments he looked back to his mate and tossed his mane slightly, nuzzling her "But i'm sure it is nothing serious" he assured her. He knew that she had grown up with the two leggeds, and she was not always used to certain instances out here in the freedom of the wild.

"Of course not" Midnight said. "Not with you and Specks to protect him." She said, nuzzling her sister. "And me" She added as she gazed down at her colt as he let out a small sneeze. Midnight smiled. "bless you my sweet colt" She said gently.

Rain nodded. She had been a wild horse with her mate for only a few months...she desperately missed her rider every day. But being with Spirit...the love of he life...her consious...it was easy to live this way. "I think I'll get myself some sleep.” She said. “It’s getting late. Do you want to say good night to your mother?” Rain asked him.

Twilight nodded "And Rusty" she added with a smile. "Really the entire herd" She said after a moment, then nuzzled her sister again lovingly. She knew her sister would still be worried... but she would do everything in her power to be sure nothing happened.

Spirit smiled and brushed her forelock from her eyes to nuzzle her "I shall join you soon, but yes, first I shall say do my round" he agreed, giving her another loving look before getting to his hooves, shaking his mane out, and moving down from the hill towards the herd. As he passed through he snorted a greeting there, accepted a friendly offering of grass here, making sure all were comfortable and at ease. He smiled as his eyes rested on two young stallions sleeping beside each other. The twins. He remembered a time... it must have been over two years ago now, when he had had to reprimand the two for their play each night. As if they could hear his thoughts, the two young horses lifted their heads. He gave them a pretend stern look, and they smiled up at him in shy hero worship. He nickered quietly to them, pawing the ground in greeting and they returned his nicker. Satisfied, he moved onwards, winding through the herd to greet each horse. Finally, he spotted the pale coat of his mother. Each time he saw her was a joy, and yet a reminder of the two years they'd been apart. Leading the herd once again had aged her swiftly, and yet she still remained as caring and gentle and loving as always. "Mother" he nickered softly as he moved towards her.

“There you are my darling son” Esperanza said. She always remained grazing before her son made his rounds. “How is Rain doing this fine evening?” She asked her colt, as she nuzzled his forelock a little bit. Her motherly instincts still kicking in as her son’s mane covered his beautiful eyes. “I’m sorry.” Esperanza said with a chuckle. “I can’t help but move your forelock from your beautiful eyes.” She said to her son.


Midnight smiled. “I know.” She said, as she suddenly pulled Apollo closer to her and put her tail around him for protection. “As long as I’m here, no mare will get him.” She said, a sudden fire glinting in her eyes that her sister had never seen before.

Twilight nuzzled her, then looked surprised at the determination. "Agreed sis" she said.

Spirit smiled gently, then chuckled as she nuzzled him, not at all embarrassed as he nuzzled her back. "Rain is doing well, although she has become more curious and worried about our neighboring herd" he said, a slight flash of worry crossing his gaze. He knew that she could be impetuous at times, and he could only hope she wouldn't try something that he might have tried two years ago. He shook his mane slightly and smiled again "It is nothing to worry over though I am sure, if need be later I shall arrange a meeting, but i doubt it shall be necessary" he assured her.

Midnight nuzzled her sister in return. “Apollo gives me a fire that I’ve never think I’ve had before.” Midnight said to her sister.

Esperanza nuzzled her son again. “She did live with twoleggers all her life.” Esperanza pointed out to him gently. “I’m sure she’ll be fine. But if I were you, I’d keep a close eye on her when you’re not near her.” Esperanza advised

Twilight smiled gently "I understand, it's a mothers love that fuels it" she said.

Spirit gave a rueful smile "I did as well, for too long" he said with a shake of his head. But still.. the face of Little Creek did not bring any feelings of horror that that other snake's had. And much as he hated to admit it.. he still missed the easy going understanding two legger. His mothers voice brought him out if his head, and he nodded. "Of course I shall try" he said, then nuzzled her "Sleep well Mother" he said softly, beginning to make his way back through the herd.

"I will sweet colt, as you shall too" Esperanza said as he made his way back through the herd. "I love you, Spirit" She called to him as she lay herself down on the grass with a happy sigh. Her beautiful son...he had so much of his father in him. If only he could've met his father. Sunfire danced playfully around her father and mother, she bumped into her mother as Spirit trotted towards them. "The lead stallion is making his rounds, time for bed my young filly" Sundancer said gently to her daughter. The filly let out a snort of protest and the mare just smiled. "Fuego" She said to her mate, nudging him gently. "I think she wants one of your stores" Sundancer said as she lay down with her little family.

Midnight nodded. "did...did this ever happen with the other three?" Midnight suddenly asked

Spirit smiled over his shoulder to his mother, nickering to her lovingly, then continued moving forwards. As he did, his ears caught the sound of a little foal's rebellious snort, and he slowed, looking over to the family with a slight smile. The same sound, the same look of rebellion, all foals did it now and then.

Fuego lifted his head from grazing and eyed his young filly with a soft yet stern looking. "Alright, but quietly so we don't disturb the others. Now little one, which story do you wish to hear tonight?" he asked as he lay down, motioning for her to lay beside him. The sound of hoofbeats caught his ears and he glanced over, dipping his head to the Lead stallion as the buckskin slowed.

Twilight tilted her head "Not to this degree, but we never knew of any threats such as other mares trying to take your foals at that time" she said.

[Abbster]

"How you met mama!" Sunfire said as she snuggled against both her parents. Sundancer chuckled and gazed at her mate before she gazed down at Sunfire once more. "I love that story" She said before her mate began to tell it. She nuzzled him between his ears and then waited as Sunfire stared up at her father with gleaming eyes.

Midnight nodded. "Yea...that's true" She said with nervousness.

Rain gazed around and she saw the silhouette of her mate walking around their herd from the top of their hill. She smiled. He was just passed Fuego and his lovely little family. She flicked her tail back and forth and felt her gaze shift to the other herd near by.

Spirit smiled again at the little one's request, then continued moving through the herd, his gaze set on the small hill rising above the herd. He sped to a canter as he charged up it, stopping when he reached the top and looking out over the peaceful herd just as the sun fully sank below the horizon. A night breeze lifted his mane and he closed his eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath of the freedom it brought. Opening his eyes again he moved to his mates side and lay down, nuzzling her. "I love you, Rain" he said, his gaze soft.

Fuega glanced over again as the Lead stallion moved onwards to his own mate, and he turned his attention to his daughter, smiling. "Alright" he said, nuzzling both his listeners, then beginning to speak. "I wasn't much more than a 3 year old stallion myself at the time. It was right in the middle of summer, and certainly one of the hottest seasons we'd had. We ended up eating the buffalo's grass because we didn't have enough. Nasty tough dry foliage that." he said with a remembering frown. He brushed away the memory of that hard time and continued. "As you know, we don't move around much, we have a good home here, and we stay in this area, although a wide one it is. Other herds certainly do move, they move from one mountain range to another yearly! And some horses don't even have herds to move with, they just move on their own. And that, was your mother. She was alone when I found her on a scout one morning. It was high sun, and her coat glinted like water in the sunlight. Our herd rules at the time were rather strict against outsiders, and I wasn't sure if I should tell the Lead Stallion or not. I ventured to meet the mare... and I fell immediately." he said, glancing up and smiling at her.

Twilight nuzzled her "It'll be ok sis. You know the patrols are on double, they won't let anything get by.

Sunfire giggled when her father began speaking. When he got towards the end of the story her eye lids began to close and she snuggled into her mothers side as she felt her fathers pelt against her as well. Sundancer smiled. "If it weren't for you..." Sundancer said when Sunfire was asleep. "I'd probably still be wandering right now, so thank you...for rescuing me" She said as she nuzzled her mate lovingly.

Rain looked up. "I love you" Rain said. "I always have, and I always will" She said.

Midnight nodded. "I know..." she said. "but what if they get caught one day?" she suddenly asked

Fuego finished the tale, then smiled as he saw his daughter was asleep. At his mates words he nuzzled her "I was the lucky one that day" he said softly.

Spirit smiled "Always?" he teased. "I seem to remember a very indifferent mare tricking me and flipping me onto my back a few years ago" he said, trying to hide the twinkle from his eyes.

Twilight's eyes widened. "You mean.. by.. humans?" she asked. The quesiton caught her off guard.
