Chloe felt for his shoulder and she lay her head on it. “Austin…” she whispered. “It’s so dark” she said. “I close my eyes…and then I open them again…and it’s so dark” she yawned and lowered her bed. “Will you stay with me?” She asked. “While I sleep?”

"Of course, I can stay with you," Austin said as he reached for his phone. He then texted Molly to see if she could bring him some extra clothes when she came next. He hated having to sleep in his uniform, but if he had to then he would. "I will not leave until you tell me to," Austin added as he gently kissed her hand. He could feel tears as they started to form, but he willed them away as he was not the type to cry. Especially in public. He knew he had to stay strong for Chloe, like she did when he was in the hospital.

Chloe smiled. "thanks" she said, closing her eyes and falling asleep. Molly glanced at her phone and the replied to Austin's message. -sure, I'll be back in about an hour with your stuff- she sent the text and told James she would be right back. She drove back to the ranch and ran into Austin's grandparents. "good news, Chloe is awake, bad news, she can't see" Molly kept it short and simple before she ran to the house and grabbed some of Austin's things. She then drove back to the hospital and went to Chloe's room. Chloe was sleeping when she got there. "here" she said to Austin. "James will be in soon to give you a break if you need one." Molly said. "and James will be here anyway to see Chloe soon." Molly added. She squeezed Chloe's hand and then left the hospital room, heading back to the waiting room

"Thanks, and I can run and grab some coffee. But I also think I need to run Jake back to my place as he is staying for a couple of days until his flight back to New York," Austin announced. That was unless Jake wanted to stay for support. But he still had to run him back to the airport as well. Austin looked at his watch and noticed that it was getting dark outside. He had not had dinner either as he was going to fix something when he got home. But since this all happened, he had not had the chance to. So, he was getting a little hungry.

James went to the hospital room a little while later. "why don't you take a break" James suggested. "I can stay with her for a while." He sat down where Austin was sitting and he looked at his little sister. "I hate seeing you like this" he said, holding her hand. Chloe's eyes fluttered open. "Who's here?" she asked. "Me" James said. "James" Chloe said, smiling. "hey little sis" he replied. "how you doin?" he asked. "Well...I can't see" Chloe told him. James sighed slightly. "Don't worry, your sight will return." he said. "but...mom thinks its best if you go back to her house for a little while." James said. "And I've agreed to go as well." James added. Chloe looked where his voice was. "Ok" she said. "I'm sorry" Tears were running down Chloe's face. "hey" James said. "you have nothing to be sorry for, you tried to calm that horse down, but he just wouldn't. Its not your fault." he promised.

Austin walked down to the coffee machine as he spotted the doctor that was in charge of Chloe. "Hey doc, I was wondering if you could explain a little about what happened with Chloe and why she is not able to see," Austin greeted the doctor.

"Of course. We have seen quite a few people come in for the same reason. The part of the brain that controls sight is in the back of the brain in a lobe called the occipital lobe. When the hoof of the horse struck the back of her head, it caused enough damage in the brain to cause her sight to be compromised. We are hoping that the strike did not cause as much damage as we thought to cause her sight to be permanent. We are hoping that there is still a possibility that it could come back. And we will do everything that we can do bring it back. Right now, time is the only thing we can contend with. So for now, we just need to keep her comfortable and treat her pain or any other symptoms that may arise," the doctor announced as he spoke to Austin.

"I see. So, we can only wait to see if her sight will come back. Do you know how long that will take?" Austin asked.

"No. we can not predict when her sight will come back. It just takes as long as it takes the brain to heal. I have to go check on another patient right now, but if you have any other questions, you can ask me or one of her nurses," the doctor said as he shook Austin's hand before leaving.

James kissed Chloe’s forehead after she had fallen asleep. He left the room and ran into Austin. “She’s sleeping” James said. “Her sight has yet to return” James said, heading back towards the waiting room. Chloe tossed and turned as she slept, she woke up sweating. “Chloe?” The nurse said, coming in. “Are you ok?” She asked. Chloe was breathing hard. “Yea” she said. “Do you know where my boyfriend is?” She asked. “Uhm…no, but I can find him” she said. Chloe nodded. “Thanks” Chloe said, laying back down. The nurse left Chloe’s room and walked around the hospital, once she found Austin she stopped him. “You’re Chloe’s Boyfriend, yes?” She asked him

"I was just talking to her doctor and he was explaining to me about Chloe's injury. It sounds like he is hopeful that her sight could come back," Austin answered before taking a drink of his coffee. He was about to speak again when a nurse came up to him. "Yes, I am. Is there something I can help you with? Austin asked. He was hoping that Chloe was okay. In the back of his mind, he began to feel a little nervous as to why the nurse was here.

“Chloe’s fine, I promise.” She said. “She has requested for you” the nurse said. Chloe sighed and put her head on the pillow, staring up the ceiling. “Austin, where are you?” Chloe muttered. She sighed. With the world being black, everything changed. If Chloe couldn’t see again, how would she deal? Suddenly, her head staring hurting, she winced and closed her eyes. “Ugh, my head” she put her hand to her head and she just lay there.

"I am right here," Austin said as he sat down in the chair that was next to her bed. When he heard her say that her head was hurting, Austin pressed the button for the nurse so that she could come in and help Chloe with whatever she needed. He began to get a little nervous now that she said her head hurt. Was that another symptom that was coming in? Could it be permanent brain damage? He did not know anything about medical, but hopefully the nurse would be able to help make it better.

“What’s up?” She asked. “My head hurts” Chloe responded. The nurse nodded. “Ok, I can give you some medicine to help” she said. Chloe nodded. “That would be great, thank you.” She said. The nurse nodded and helped Chloe take the medicine. Molly came back a few mins later. “I’ve got your pillow, and a blanket, oh and Ellie, for emotional support” Molly said. “They allowed Ellie in?” She asked. “Yea, I explained she’s an emotional support animal” Molly said, helping Ellie onto the bed. “Hi Ellie” Chloe said, feeling around for her. When she found her, she rubbed her hands along Ellie’s back. Once Molly left, Chloe grabbed Austin’s hand. “I want to go home” she said.

"I am sorry, but you have to stay here as the doctor said. I am not going to take you back home and have something happen to you," Austin explained as he shook his head. There was no way that he was going to be responsible for her death if she went home and something worse was going to happen. "The medical staff want to make sure that you are okay before you can go home. I get it. I wanted to go home as well, but I knew that if something happened to me, my Pop would not be able to do anything for me. As I said, I will stay here with you."

Chloe sighed but nodded. She lay back in her bed and pulled Ellie close. Chloe yawned and closed her eyes, falling asleep. When she woke up, Chloe gazed around. She smiled when she saw Austin sitting beside her. “Hey” she said. Her vision was still very blurry, but she could see. She grabbed his hand and said. “I can see” Chloe whispered. “Austin, I can see” tears started running down her face. “I can see” she said. Ellie licked her face. “Hi Ellie” Chloe said, laughing. “Everything is still super blurry, but I can see” Chloe said. She laughed and started crying more. “I can see!!”

Austin had fallen asleep in the chair with his feet propped up and crossed on the seat of another chair as he was jostled awake. He didn't even manage to change out of his uniform. As Austin woke up, he remembered that he had given the keys to his truck and house to Jake so that he could get some rest in the guestroom that was next to his office. Rubbing his eyes, Austin sat up and stretched his body since it was a little stiff from sleeping in a sitting position. "That is great news. I was beginning to worry that it was permanent. This meant that Austin did not have to give up his career.

“Can we go home now?” Chloe asked. She hated hospitals, no matter why she was there, she just hated them. “Please” she asked. Chloe sighed, knowing Austin would most likely say no. She rubbed Ellie behind the ears and she just wished she could leave. 3 days later, Chloe was finally released. The doctors wanted to wait until her eye sight was fully back. “Now, can we go home?” Chloe asked. James stopped them. “No, remember, you’re staying with mom and me for a few days” he said. Chloe glanced at Austin and then back at her brother. “I’m sorry” Chloe said. “I forgot, mom made me promise..” she said to Austin. “I’m really sorry” she said. “I’ll be back at the ranch in 3 days, unless….you want to come with us” Chloe said. “It will be up to my mom, but she will probably say yes” Chloe said.
