Ellie whined and protested, trying to wiggle free of Austin's arms. He placed her into the tub of warm water and she tried escaping the side, but it was too slippery for her. Chloe grabbed Ellie's shampoo and squeezed some into her hand. "thats a good girl" Chloe said as she rubbed the shampoo along Ellie's back. Ellie whined again and tried escaping. "you want a treat?" Chloe asked. Ellie sat down and tilted her head to one side. "yea?" Chloe said, again, rubbing her hands on Ellie's back. "her treat box is right behind me, if you could grab one to keep her preoccupied." Chloe said. She rubbed the shampoo onto Ellie's head now. Molly knocked on the bathroom door. "Clo" she said. "what are you doing?" she asked, opening the door. "NO!" Chloe said. "Molly, close the door, she'll escape." Molly stepped inside the bathroom and instantly closed the door just as Ellie escaped the tub

Austin was just about to reach for the treat box when the door was opened and Ellie tried to escape. With his fast reflexes, Austin stood and grabbed Ellie around her chest and picked her up before she could escape. He then put the dog back into the tub and ignored the fact that his western cut red shirt was soaking wet. He reached behind him for a treat. "Now, don't try that again." He was used to expecting the unexpected. Maybe a cow would try to escape him when he was trying to herd them into a trailer. He needed to act fast in order to make sure that the cow did not escape and cause more chaos. He then turned to Molly. "We are just getting Ellie ready. Is there something you need?" He still had a good grip on her collar so that she would not try to escape again.

"Well, I was hoping I could take a shower" Molly said. Chloe turned, looking at Molly. "We have other bathrooms ya know." Chloe said. Molly sighed. "Fine, at least give me the things I need." Chloe nodded, and reached forward grabbing all the things Molly would need. "Oh, don't forget my..." Chloe interrupted her. "your detangling hair brush, yea, I know" Chloe said, handing her the last thing. Molly smiled. "thanks, Clo" Molly said, opening the door slowly and leaving slowly. After Ellie's bath, Chloe grabbed her favorite towel, it had little dog bones on it. She put it around Ellie and scooped her out of the tub. "there you go" Chloe said, placing her down on the bath mat. "all clean." she rubbed the towel along Ellie's back for a while before Ellie shook the rest of her body, spraying water everywhere. "Ellie!!" Chloe said laughing.

Austin was used to it when he gave Maverick a bath when he was dirty after a day of working with the cattle or he got into the mud on a rainy day. He then grabbed another towel to wipe his face dry before helping to dry off Ellie. Once she was dry, Austin stood up. "If you don't mind, I am going to get ready myself. I just need to change into my uniform. Is there another bathroom I can borrow?" He then looked at Ellie and then Chloe. If she needed him to do something before he changed, than it was okay.

"Molly is probobly showering in her bathroom, god knows why she wanted to use this one. But yea, theres a bathroom downstairs to the right of the staircase." Chloe said, continuing to dry Ellie off. When Ellie was fully dry, she brushed out her knotted fur with the dog brush she had for her. Afterwards, she put her dads favorite bow in her hair, making her look all pretty. "there" Chloe said, trying not to cry. "I think dad would really like that." she rubbed Ellie behind the ears and then went to her room to get ready herself

Heading downstairs, Austin grabbed his uniform in the black garment bag and then headed to the bathroom to change. It did not take long to change into his uniform before he headed out into the living room where he started to tie his black necktie around his neck like he had done many times before. It was awkward for him to be wearing his uniform when he was not even going to work. But it was a sign of respect to wear it for a fallen retired pilot. Once his tie was perfectly tied, he reached into the bag for his shoes which was a pair of black leather Amberjacks. He had made sure last night to shine them so that they looked professional and ready for use. Again, he reached into the bag and pulled out his uniform jacket. He was not used to wearing it this time of year since it was still warm. But he knew that the jacket would make him look better and well put together. He stuck all his clothes and cowboy boots that he was wearing earlier into the garment bag before he grabbed his hat and laid it on the arm of the couch. He never wore the hat inside. There was a mirror on the wall that he checked himself as he adjusted his tie some more.

Chloe rummaged through her closet, looking for her black dress that her dad loved. Once she found it, she slipped it on and began looking for Ellie’s funeral collar and leash. She turned to find Ellie having zoomies across the floor. “No no no!” Chloe said. “Ellie, not here!” She begged. But it was to late, once Ellie starts the zoomies, she doesn’t stop until she’s finished. Ellie bumped into Chloe’s dresser and the snow globe her dad had gotten her from Iceland slowly tipped until it fell onto the hard wood flooring and shattered. “No” Chloe said, rushing over to it. Molly knocked on the door. “Clo?” She said. “Is everything ok?” She could hear Chloe crying, Molly opened the door. “What happened?” She asked. “Ellie had the zoomies, and she bumped into my dresser” Chloe said, cleaning up the snow that had fallen onto the floor. “Oh Chloe” Molly said, moving towards her and hugging her. Chloe looked at Molly. “You ready to go?” She asked. Molly nodded. “Yea, I’ll take Ellie downstairs for you” she said. “Thanks” Chloe said as Molly grabbed Ellie’s collar and went down stairs.

Austin suddenly heard a crash of something glass upstairs and headed towards where he had heard it and found Chloe cleaning up a broken snow globe. "Hey, is everything alright?" he asked as he noticed the broken glass. He knelt down as he began to help her clean up the mess. He reached for a towel to begin cleaning up the water and the little snowflakes that was inside the snow globe. He figured that it was something special to her as she looked like she had been crying. He felt bad for Chloe and seeing her this way hurt. He wanted to make her feel better. He then reached for the trash can in her room so that they could put the broken pieces of glass in there.

“My dad gave me this” Chloe said. “You know how you bought Lily snow globes? My dad bought me one on his last plane trip” Chloe said. Leaning forward and resting her head on his shoulder. “I totally forgot Ellie gets zoomies after the bath” Molly called from downstairs. “Hey! Come on you two, we’re going to be late!” She said. Chloe glanced at the clock. “shoot, it’s 2:30, we gotta go” she said, standing up, grabbing his hand and running down the stairs. She tossed Austin his keys. “Mols, you don’t mind coming with us, do ya?” She asked. Molly shook her head. “Anything for my best friend” she said, hugging her as they went outside. Molly opened the back door of the truck. “In Ellie” Ellie jumped in the truck and Molly followed after her. Chloe go into the front seat and buckled her seat belt

Austin grabbed his hat off the arm of the couch and followed the girls and Ellie outside to his truck. He figured that it would be best to take one car. Placing his garment bag full of the clothes he was wearing earlier into the toolbox in the bed of the truck, he then got into the front seat and started the diesel truck. Once they were ready, he backed out of the driveway. "Chloe, can you put the address of the funeral home in the GPS for me?" he asked, pointing to the touchscreen next to the steering wheel on the consol. He would stop, but they were already late as it was. Austin hoped the traffic would not be as bad as it was earlier that morning.

“Yea” Chloe said, reaching forward to put it in. Her hand was shaking. Molly put her hand on Chloe’s shoulder. “I got it” Molly said, putting it in for Austin. She started crying as they drove. Ellie came up to the front of the car and sat in Chloe’s lap, licking her tears away. Chloe tried laughing, but she couldn’t. She hugged Ellie and soon, they arrived at the funeral home. She put Ellie’s leash on and got out. Ellie jumped down beside her. Chloe held Austin’s hand as they walked inside. She was shaking some more as they walked inside. “Uh, no dogs allowed.” The lady said. “I’m sorry, but she ment a lot to my dad when he was alive.” Chloe said. The lady nodded and allowed Ellie in. Chloe sat down in her seat next to Austin and put her head on his shoulder again.

When Ellie came up to the front of the truck, Austin wanted to tell her to put the dog back in the back seat, but he could see that Chloe needed Ellie there. He gave her hand a squeeze as he drove and then focused on the drive. He finally pulled into the funeral home where there was not that many spaces left. Luckily he was able to find a spot in the front of the parking lot. He grabbed his hat that was on the dashboard and put it on, Once inside, it was kind of packed with people who knew Chloe's father and other pilots from United and other airlines (all in uniform) that knew him. Austin greeted a few of them with a nod or a handshake before following Chloe to the area that they would sit in. Some of the pilots he knew. Some he didn't. "Would it be okay for me to speak during the funeral?" Austin whispered as they sat down in their seats.

“Thats honestly , up to my mom” Chloe said, rubbing Ellie’s head. Chloe waved her mom over. “Can Austin say a few words during the funeral?” Chloe asked. Her mom nodded. “Of course” her mom said. Chloe wanted to smile, but she still couldn’t. When the funeral started, her mom said a few words before she called Chloe and James to the stand. James said a few words and then it was Chloe’s turn. Austin was holding onto Ellie for her. Chloe stepped up to the mic. “My father was an amazing man.” She started. “I remember all the times he came home late from a flight, and my mom would let me stay up late to see him. He would drop everything as soon as he walked through the door, and lift me off the ground like I was flying” Chloe said. James held his little sisters hand as she kept speaking. “On my 7th birthday, he got me my very first puppy. He was a golden doodle, who I named Mac and Cheese” Chloe said. The crowd laughed. “Yea” she said. “I had quite the imagination” she said. “That’s what my dad always said he loved most about me. My imagination” Chloe began crying and she just held her brothers hand harder. “I don’t think I would be where I am now without my dad. He turned me into the person I am today, and I will never forget what an impact he had on my life” Chloe said. “I love and miss you so much dad” Chloe said as tears streamed down her face. “Thank you” the crowd clapped and Chloe hugged her brother. Then, her mom went up again. “We will now here from some of the pilots he flew with during his flying time. First up, Zack” her mom said. Chloe walked down the stage stairs and passed her fathers open casket before she sat down next to Austin and held his hand again.

During the speeches, Austin listened to each story. When it was his turn, Austin let go of Chloe's hand and headed up for the podium. Clearing his throat and began to speak. "Hello, my name is Capitan Austin Woods. I worked with the Capitan at United Airlines. I have been there about 5 years and love every minute of it. When i first started out as a First Officer, I was in the cockpit with him a lot. He sort of was like a mentor to me whenever I flew with him. I remember one day when he walked into the cockpit after I had finished the walk around of our plane that he told me that I had a promising career and said that I would become a Capitan in no time. That is if I wanted it. Because of him, I wanted it. Every time we would fly together it was like being in a classroom as he would often quiz me on different procedures so that I could keep up with my skills as a pilot. Trust me, I have a degree in Aviation from the Texas Southern University. It brought me back to the times I was in class. During my simulator training, I sit and remember everything that he taught me. I didn't know him long like many of you. But I often feel that I know him now through his daughter, Chloe. I know that he is going to keep his eye on her even after death. Next time that either one of my brothers and sisters of aviation are in the cockpit, I want you to think about the things that he taught you. Or how he changed your life. I know that he changed my life from the first time that we met." He then turned to the open casket. " Capitan, because of you, I was able to make it to the rank of Capitan. Who knows, maybe because of you, I will become the next Fleet Capitan for United Airlines."

Chloe clapped her hands and watched as he walked down the podium. “Now, I know this one is going to be strange” Chloe’s mom said. “But Ellie, Chloe’s dog would like to say some thing apparently” she said looking a Chloe. Chloe rolled her eyes but picked up Ellie and walked to the podium. She talked for Ellie. “My dad and Ellie had a special bond. Whenever he came over, she would jump on him and he would always throw the ball for her. It’s like whenever he was around, she never did anything wrong.” Chloe said, rubbing Ellie behind the ears. “She hates baths, but when it was my dad giving her the bath, she never had any problems.” Chloe said. She turned to Ellie. “Ellie, you know what you want to say” Ellie barked and then Chloe took her back down. “My mom planned that” she whispered beginning to cry again. Once the funeral was over, Chloe stayed with her mom for a while to meet some of the captains. Austin stayed with her the entire time. “My husband would’ve really liked you Austin” her mother said to Austin before he and Chloe left. “I’m glad you met my daughter” she finished. Chloe blushed slightly, but her eyes were red from crying.
