Midnight felt her pelt burning with sweat. That was odd considering she wasn't outside. She layed down on the ground of her stall and started breathing heavily slightly. Midnight remembered this from when she was little. She remembered it so perfectly because she thought she was going to die. Midnight knew she was colicing. She didn't know how long it had been but soon the humans were at her side, petting her neck and talking to her. "come on Midnight" the man said. "you have to get up." Midnight sat up but was unable to stand. Human after human were running down the barn and towards her stall. The man grabbed his phone and called the vet. She could hear him talking on it, but all she thought about was her family. Midnight took a shaky breath and lifted her head up. "come on girl" the man said. Midnight stood on her legs and got up. Soon, the vet arrived and looked her over. "she definitely has colic, and it seems to be one of the bad cases, I'm going to need to take her with me to the vet." Midnights halter was put around her head and she was lead past her sister and out of the barn into a trailer, her head down the entire way. When they got to the vet, Midnight was put into a stall and she instantly layed down again. She neighed for Twilight but knew her sister could not hear her. The man was with her, stroking her neck. "we need to bring Twilight here" he said. The vet looked at him. "why?" she asked. "Midnight needs her sister right now, I can tell." he grabbed his phone and called Twilights care taker. "hi" he said. "can you bring Twilight down to the vet, Midnight needs her sister."

Twilight raised her head as a commotion slowly grew down the hall. Getting to her feet she listlessly poked her head out her stall, pricking her ears to hear what it was all about. And then her heart froze. Midnight... colicing? While she wasn't there? She snorted and banged against her stall nervously, pacing and whinnying at the humans rushing by her. But no one stopped. No one realized how much she needed to be there with her sister! A moment later she heard hooves on the concrete, and then a very sick looking Midnight was lead by her. "MIDNIGHT!" she whinnied frantically as she watched them take her away, out of sight. She heard a truck start up, and then a strange silence fell upon the barn. The next few minutes Twilight paced her stall, getting increasingly panicked, kicking out at her stall door and neighing loudly. "WOAH girl!!" a familiar voice rang through the barn as the man who usually took care of her ran up to her stall. "It's ok Twilight, I know what's upsetting you, that's why I'm here. Yes your sister has colic, but they just called and told me to bring you over there to be with her. If you calm down i'll come in and get your halter on" he said quickly, reaching for the halter on the hook. Eyes wide Twilight immediately calmed down and took a step back from the door, pawing the ground in impatience as he unlocked the door. Finally he got her halter on and lead her out into a waiting van, which she entered without a second's hesitation. Her sister needed her, and no human contraption was going to spook her today. The ride seemed to last HOURs as she shifted nervously in the metal trailer, unused to traveling in such a fashion, and very worried for Midnight. Finally the truck slowed and stopped, and she heard a car door slam. The noise of footsteps on gravel, and then the bolts were shot back and the door swung open. She danced in place nervously, tossing her head as she tried to look behind her. "Easy girl, i'm still here" the man said soothingly as he quickly untied her and backed her down the ramp. Twilight's ears pricked as she emerged from the trailer and she pushed her nose in the air, scenting the wind deeply. Her eyes brightened and she almost dragged the man along as she leaped forward at the scent of her sister. "MIDNIGHT!" she whinnied, hoping she would hear her and know her big sister was almost there.

Midnights eyes were glazed with sickness, but her ears pricked forward at the sound of her sisters hoof beats coming closer. "she's here Midnight" the man said, rubbing her nose lovingly. "Twilight's here" Midnight picked her head up slightly and looked around. Her eyes rested on her sister. She could see nervousness in her eyes. The man who was caring for Twilight didn't waste a second. He opened Midnights stall door and led Twilight inside. Midnight was still laying on the ground, eyes glazed. Her head was picked up and she was alert of her sister beside her. "You're ok Midnight" the man said, he kissed her nose and Midnight pinned her ears back in surprise. She closed her eyes slightly and just prayed to the stars of epona that she would be ok. The vet had returned. "I canceled all of my other appointments and told my clients there was an emergency with colic, they all understand and are going to take there horses to other vets." she leaned down and looked at Midnight. "how did this happen exactly?" she asked. The man shrugged. "she was outside acting fine all night and then she came in and was huffing on the ground of her stall." the man explained. The vet rubbed her hand along Midnight's back. "I gave her some fluids, it should help with the colic." the vet said. Midnight had inched herself over to Twilight and was resting her head on her sisters back.

Twilight's eyes filled with care and worry for her sister as she burst into the small barn and saw her sister laying listlessly on the straw. "Oh Midnight" she said softly, ignoring the human beside her as he undid her halter and let her into the stall. Quickly she lay down beside her sister, nuzzling her gently. "It'll be ok sis, I'm here" she whispered, laying her head next to her sister as she felt Midnight's head on her back. Her ears flicked as the humans talked, half listening to them. She picked up bits and pieces, the vet asking how it had happened, the man saying something about them being outside. She frowned, trying to think back on the night they had spent in the field. Had her sister eaten something bad? She couldn't remember... she'd just been so happy, and being with the humans had dulled many of her instincts she sadly realized. Her ears pulled back slightly as the vet stepped closer and ran her hand over her sister's back, suspiciously watching her. They wouldn't do anything to her sister while she was on watch, she'd make sure of that. With a sigh she found herself wishing Rusty were there. Surely he'd know what to do better than any two legger!

Midnight took another shaky breath and she soon fell asleep. When she woke up, she forgot where she was. She looked around, her mind whirling with thoughts. Then she remembered she had colic. She was in a stall and she saw Twilight next to her. Midnight stood up and looked around some more. "hi girl" the vet said. "I see you're feeling a little bit better." she reached her hand in to pet Midnight. Midnight let out a soft snort and the vet laughed. Midnight walked around a bit before she bent her head in the water bucket and drank a long sip of water. Refreshing. Midnight layed back down and put her head back down on the straw closing her eyes and falling asleep

Twilight stayed awake, watching the humans come and go as her sister slept and pinning her ears back warningly if any came too close for comfort. But eventually she nodded off into a dreamless sleep. A few hours later a shifting beside her brought her out of her doze and she lifted her head, watching as her sister got to her feet, walking around a bit and even drinking some water. She smiled to herself, relieved that she was ok, and accepting that maybe humans did know a thing or two about horses. But still they couldn't be fully trusted, even if some of them were mildly ok. She waited for Midnight to lay back down before shifting herself to a more comfortable position and falling asleep once more, a light smile on her muzzle.

When Midnight woke up later she was in a field. She looked around and she saw Specks laying next to her, gazing at her with love in his eyes. "how was your nap?" he asked. Midnight stood up instantly and looked around. She was home, or so she thought. "it was...great" she said. She kept looking around. "Where's Twilight?" she asked. Specks tilted his head. "who's Twilight?" he asked. Midnight looked at her mate. "what do you mean who's Twilight? She's my older sister, the mate of Rusty." Specks looked at Midnight and then Rusty. "Honey, Rusty's mate is Dandelion." Midnight looked at him with confusion in her eyes. "mama! you're awake!!" Stardust. Midnight thought. She turned to greet her filly but the foal who came up to her was not Stardust. "Specks...who is this?" she asked. "Our daughter" he replied. "Starshine." he nuzzled the fill called Starshine. "and our colt, Crumb." Midnight shook her head. "this isn't right." she said. "I have two daughters, with you, named Beauty and Stardust, and an older sister named Twilight who is the mate of Rusty and she has two fillys as well, named Songbird and Nutmeg." Specks rested his tail on Midnight's back. "you must still be tired, lay back down and get some more sleep." Midnight nodded slightly before she layed down and went back to sleep. She woke up gasping. She looked around and saw the stall, and her sister laying right next to her. "oh thank god it was just a dream"

Twilight jerked out of her, thankfully, dreamless sleep, immediately looking over at her sister to make sure she was fine. She breathed a sigh of relief that she looked alert and well, then nudged her, seeing the relieved, yet unsettled expression on her face. "Bad dream?" she asked gently.

[Abbster]

"it was horrible" Midnight mumbled. "i was back with the herd...but..you wernt there" she told her sister about her dream and how she never existed when midnight suddenly felt like she had to lay down again. She put her head on the ground and closed her eyes, groaning slightly as her stomach ached with pains

Twilight nuzzled her sister comfortingly as she listened to the dream, shivering slightly as she imagined how horrible it must have been. "I'm sorry about that dream sis, but you need to remember, it was just a dream. They're all still there and they're waiting for us, you'll see" she said softly with a smile. But her smile faded as Midnight suddenly lay back down, her head on the floor groaning. "Mid?" she asked in a worried tone, then louder "Midnight, what's wrong?" Obviously something was wrong from the way she was groaning. Raising her head Twilight looked over the stall door, then neighed loudly, hoping to attract a human's attention for once. She realized they were the only ones who could figure out how to help her sister now that Rusty wasn't around.

The humans came running at Twilights warning call. they looked at Midnight. "oh god" the vet said, opening the door and putting her hand on Midnight. Midnights eyes suddenly flew open. She stood up and did her biasness before looking at the vet and then her sister. "twily" she mumbled. "are you ok?" she asked, seeing the worry in her sisters eyes. "Midnight can go home now" the vet said. "shes been here for a few days and her colic is cleared, clearly, she just went to the bathroom" the vet said. She put Midnights halter on and midnights human put Twilights on and they were led to a trailer where they were led back to the horrible barn. Midnight sighed as she and her sister were put in separate stalls. Although, the stalls were close to eachother, it wasnt the same as being with her sister. Midnight bent her head and started eating some hay. "I wanna go home" Midnight said to her sister

Twilight looked over at her sister, eyes showing relief, and then she laughed helplessly. "Yeah sis, i'm fine" she said shaking her head slightly then nuzzling her. She submitted as the man came and took her to the trailer, putting them both in and driving back to the barn. She sighed as they were lead back out, assuming she would be put back in her old stall. Her ears perked up slightly as she realized she was being placed right beside Midnight, and she entered quickly, turning so he could remove the halter then waiting for her sister to go in as well. Reaching her head over at her sister's voice she sighed "I know sis... so do I, but I just don't know how we're going to honestly. There are humans here around the clock (a term she picked up from the humans)..." she sighed as a human walked by, proving her point.

[Abbster]

"We should have just escaped last night" Midnight muttered. "it would've been so much easier." she sighed and took a long drink of water before poking her head out her outside door. She looked around and wind blew around her mane. She pinned her ears back in sadness. Their herd was days, maybe even weeks away by now, how would they ever find them? Would Specks still be waiting for her with their fillies? How much of her daughters lives had she missed. A tear rolled down Midnights face but she shook her head and told herself it was all going to be ok, at least she hoped it would be

Twilight sighed as well, nodding "I know, but i wasn't sure if you were well enough to make it" she said sadly, a now familiar ache filling her chest at the thought of her family. How long was it since she had seen them last? She couldn't even remember. She snorted sadly, head drooping. How would they ever get out? It would take a miracle. And frankly, she was out of miracles.
