Midnight looked out her stall door and watched as men slowly left the barn for the night. It was raining, so they were not allowed outside that night. Before the final man left, he flicked the light switch and the barn went dark. She could hear the rumbling of the barn door being closed and the starting of cars. Midnight walked around for a while before she bent her head in her water trough and began to take a sip of water. When she finished drinking her water, she yawned and lied down on a soft piece of her hay. She closed her eyes and slowly fell asleep.

Twilight, feeling extremely depressed, nibbled slightly at her hay, then listlessly moved to her water bucket and slurped for a few minutes. With a deep sigh she lay down on her stall floor, her eyes dull. What more could they do? They were trapped, it would seem, forever.

More days had passed since Midnight had colic. She still had not been allowed outside, and eachday, she watched Twilight walk past her stall and go outside, eachday, midnight got more and more sad. Would they ever escape. Finally, night was on its way and Twilight was once again taken outside. Midnight was left in her stall. She sighed and ate some of her hay before settling herself down on her hay bed for sleep

Twilight had gotten more and more depressed over the next few days. She hardly saw Midnight except for a passing glimpse, and she no longer even attempted to misbehave with the humans. What was the point? Each day she stood alone in the field, grazing out of necessity, then just moping around the fence line, knees locked, eyes half closed as as sunny days of old flashed across her mind. In the day she'd be in her stall, and in the night she'd be outside. When they came to get her that day she listlessly moved forward, pausing for the human to loop the rope around her neck carelessly instead of putting the halter on, and with a mild tug she clopped along, not even recognizing the fact that she could've escaped if she'd wanted to as she was put in the pasture. Deciding sleep was the better option, the other one being thought, she lay down, curling up tightly for warmth and minimal comfort before dozing off.

Midnight sighed and she watched as the sun rose into the sky the next morning. If they didn't escape soon, they would be trapped in this place for eternity. With a small shiver as cold wind blew into her stall, she layed next to her stall door, not even noticing as the horses were brought in for the morning. Midnights ears were never forward anymore. They were always either pinned behind her head, or angled sadly. Midnight heaved a sigh as more wind blew into her mane. Her eyes half closed she watched as the sun was covered by gray clouds and a soft snow began to fall

Twilight lifted her head as the usual man to take care of her came to the gate, clicking his tongue for her. With a sigh she heaved herself up and moseyed over to him, waiting for him to loop the rope over her before leading her back to the barn. Her eyes were dull as she automatically headed for her stall.. until the man pulled on her rope gently. "Hey girl, I don't know why, but i can see that you're feeling a little blue today. So, i thought we'd have a special visit before we put you back in your stall, whaddaya say?" Her ears pricked just the slightest bit, as she glanced at him. A visit? To whom? "Just come on" he said with a slight laugh at her expression. She followed obediently, the rope sliding over her neck as she moved forward after him. Her ears perked up more as she realized where they were headed down the line of stalls. Midnight! Finally they reached the stall and she pushed her head through the opening. "Midnight!" she nickered excitedly.

Midnights eyes shot open and she instantly stood up. "Twily!!" Midnight neighed happily, shoving her face through the opening, and rubbing herself all along her sister. She nickered happily. "I missed you" she mumbled, pressing her face into her sisters neck. "We need to get out of here." she said. "the first night im back outside, we need to escape" she determined. "what do you say?" she took a step back and looked at her sister hopefully. She wanted her sister to say yes, she wanted to go home, back with her family, back where she belonged.

Twilight inhaled her sister's scent, nuzzling her happily. "I missed you two sis" she answered with a sad smile. Her eyes widened as Midnight suddenly spoke of escaping. "Well.. I..." she said, wavering. And then she shook herself. What was she thinking? Of course they had to escape! These humans may have tried to twist her mind over to them, but no, she would not bend! "Yes, Definitely. We've been here too long. It's time to go." she said, her eyes flashing with a forgotten fire as she glanced over at the man holding the lead rope. And then she noticed it was just looped around her neck. How long had she been docile enough for them to do this? Her ears pinned, angry with herself. She had almost become... domesticated.

Midnights eyes lit up when Twilight agreed. Soon the man lead her sister away. "I love you, sis!!" Midnight called down the barn hallway and after her sister. She paced around her stall for what felt like ages until finally, her man came over to her. "I talked to the vet" he said, opening the door. "she said you can go outside tonight." Midnights eyes lit up. Finally, they would have the chance to escape. Midnight neighed happily as her halter was put around her head and she was lead to the pasture. When she got there, the sun was already starting to go down, and Midnight waited at the gate for her sister to arrive. Tonight would be the night they escape.

Twilight nickered back to her sister as she was led away, back to her stall. Ears alert this time, she quickly began eating her hay and drinking her water, knowing she would need increased strength for the escape. And she didn't even want to start thinking about how hard it would be to find the herd now. How long had they been in this barn? She couldn't remember. Finally night fell and she eagerly waited by her stall door, whinnying impatiently as the man finally appeared. He laughed as he jogged up to her stall. "Well, someone must realize her sister's outside!" he said jovially, opening the stall and looping the rope around her neck. Wait, Midnight was outside? That meant they would escape that night!!! She almost pulled the man to the pasture, him good naturedly allowing it. The gate opened, and the rope slipped off her neck, and she quickly raced over to Midnight, nuzzling her happily. "So, tonight?" she said after a pause. She frowned and added "Do you... do you know how long we've been here? I lost track of time" she admitted, glancing back at the barn as the man walked back to hang her halter up. Her eyes softened slightly. He'd been good to her, as far as humans went, and she had to admit she might miss him just a teensy bit after this.

Midnight glanced at her sister. “Actually…twilight…I’ve been thinking.” She knew what she was about to say would change both their lives forever. “I….I think I want to stay” she gazed up at the darkening sky. “We’re safe here, they take care of us.” Midnights eyes were clouded. “Of course I’ll miss specks, and my fillies, but….they’ve probably forgotten about us.” Midnights voice grew shaky. “I understand if you want to leave…but my handler has been so great to me, and we still see each other, like everyday.” Midnight looked back at her sister. “I’m so sorry” midnight bent her head slightly and walked away from her sister. Unable to look at her. She stopped and looked back at her sister. “And you never know, maybe our mates and fillies will purposefully get caught to be with us. But..I want to stay…for now..at least. Winter is about to start, we’ll be warm inside the barn, everyday.” Midnight sighed. “Just….maybe..think about it” she said

Twilight's eyes widened and her heart lurched uncertainly. She definitely had considered staying... but her family was so important to her, and the thought of never seeing Rusty again almost tore her apart. But she knew she could never leave her sister. "Midnight... are you sure? What about our families? Our fillies? Our mates? Our herd? What would our purpose be here? What if they start force breeding us? Or what if we get sold one day? Then how do we find each other?" she asked, knowing the questions were hard, but also knowing that she had to try. She wouldn't leave without her sister, but a life of bondage... of uncertainty... how could she live like that forever?

Midnight didn't know what to say. She knew her sister was right, in everything she said. "ok" Midnight finally muttered. "once the sun goes down, we'll figure out a plan of escape" she said, glancing at the open behind the field they were in. "Twily...its going to take months to find the herd again, you know that right?" They both knew the answer to what Midnight said. They had no idea how far away their herd was or if they were even waiting for them anymore. Midnight heaved a sigh. "We have to try though" she determined.
