Twilight nuzzled her sister, "Easy there, I know it hurts, you're almost there" she said, holding her against her. Sunlight reached over to nuzzle her as well, moving closer as Rusty got up to continue his pacing, unable to sit still.

Midnight groaned slightly again, and then, the pain stopped. "You did it." Oreo said. She leaned down to nuzzle Midnights foal who was smaller than her siblings, but seemed to be alive. "Is it alive?" Midnight asked weakly. "Yes." Oreo said. "Your little filly is alive, she's small, but she's alive." Oreo said. Midnight knew she had to stand up to let her new filly nurse, but she was so tired and had no energy. "Midnight" Oreo said. "I know you're tired, but if you want the filly to live, let her nurse." Midnight nodded and stood up with the help of Specks and Twilight. She nudged her filly towards her belly where she latched on and began to suckle. Midnight nuzzled her filly again and then when she finished, they both lay down and fell asleep

Twilight gasped as the new filly took it's first breath, opening it's blurry little eyes slightly to look around. She seemed to be extremely weak.. and so was her mother. "You can do it Midnight" she said encouragingly, pressing her side against her sisters to help her get to her hooves, staying beside her in case she needed support as the filly nursed. After a few minutes, both lay down and immediately fell asleep. She lay down beside her sister, the rest of the family either grazing or laying down around them as well. No one had had time to really get excited over the birth, as they were all nervous for the small filly. But Twilight knew smallness was nothing to worry about. Nutmeg had been that small, and everyone had been worried, but she'd survived, and was now the fastest in the herd. Plus, that'd been in the winter. This was spring, much easier. With a happy, relaxing sigh, she laid her head down, dozing off slowly.

Midnights dreams were full of her small filly dying. Her tail twitched, her body ached. Midnight gasped and her eyes shot open. She looked around breathless. She looked down. Her small filly was breathing normally and midnight let out a breath of relaxation. She sighed again. Now, midnight had to think about a name for her little girl. She had talked it over with specks, and they both agreed that Nightstar, would be the perfect name for her. It ment so special to midnight that her daughter had a part of her dads name in it. Midnight was still extremely weak and she felt her body giving up on her. Having a foal that early was extremely dangerous, for both the mare and the foal. Midnight knew that if she didn’t get better or stronger again, she would most likely die. Midnight pressed against her sister, Midnights body was shaking.

Twilight awoke from her light doze slowly, at the feel of a slight pressure and trembling against her. Her eyes snapped open and she raised her head to press her muzzle against Midnight's neck. "Midnight!" she exclaimed, then turned and whinnied for Rusty. He came at a flying canter, and immediately knew what was wrong. "I'll be right back" he said, galloping into the woods. No time to consult Starlight, he had to go off his gut on this. Here and there he snatched some herbs and plants for rejuvenation and energy, then raced back in ten minutes. Twilight waited worriedly. "It's ok Midnight, he'll be right back, you'll be ok" she said nuzzling her again. He appeared and slid to a stop in front of them, dust sliding. Setting the plants down, he striped some of leaves, roots, and petals, then pushed the parts she was supposed to eat in front of her. "Eat these quickly" he said abruptly, then after taking a few breaths, explained. "I would give you stronger herbs, but I can't risk the filly getting any through your milk. Once you eat, we need to get you on your feet and over to a grazing area. Twilight will be more than capable to watch over her new niece" he said.

Midnight ate the herbs he had given her and then she gazed at her sister. "I can't leave Nightstar." she mumbled weakly. "Specks...and I...came up with...Nightstar...for her name...because it reminds me of dad." she said weakly again. Her body still shaking. "Midnight, honey" Specks said. "you have to." he said. Midnight didn't want to leave her filly's side, not while she was this small. Midnight tried getting to her feet, but she was still shaking, falling over she took a shaky breath and collapsed onto the grass. "mom" Stardust said. "please" Midnight could hear the worry in her daughters voice. "o-ok." she said, getting up again with Rusty and Specks' help, she got over to a good grazing area. She bent her head and treid to eat some grass. "I can't" she said weakly. "I can't eat."

Twilight nuzzled her sister, "That's a perfect name, but you need to go. She needs you, but she needs you strong." she said, then watched with worry as they helped her sister to her feet weakly. She was so fragile suddenly... what if... what if she didn't make it? The thought shot through her mind and she winced at the idea. How could she live without her sister? It was unthinkable. And Nightstar, she needed her mother. At that thought she quickly moved close to the filly and curled around her, sheltering the small thing from the wind. "I'm here, It's your aunt Twily" she said, gently nuzzling her.

Rusty quickly moved to Midnight's side and helped her up and over to the grazing area, staying beside her as she bent her head to eat. He was just feeling relief, when he heard her weak voice. Looking over at Specks, he nodded "Ok, let's get her down for a minute" he said, easing her body to the ground. "I know of some berries that are ok for her to eat and for the filly, we can mash them up in water and maybe she can drink it" He said, getting a bit desperate.

Specks nodded. "I'll keep trying to get her to eat." Specks said. He nuzzled his mate. "Please Midnight." he whispered. "you need to eat." tears were running down his face. "I can't" she muttered from the ground. "I just can't" Midnight closed her eyes. "Midnight" Specks said. "Midnight, please" he was crying harder now. "PLEASE!" He begged. "do it for Nightstar." he said. Midnight's eyes opened. "yea" he said. "remember? Nightstar, our new filly. She needs you to be strong." Midnight nodded slightly and got to her feet again. She bent her head and took a bite of grass. "there you go" Specks said. "keep eating!" he begged. "I'll be right back." he nuzzled her and trotted over to where he left his new filly. "She's eating, but she's very weak." he said. Stardust looked up at her father, tears falling down her face. "is she gonna be ok?" she asked. "thats the plan" Specks said, turning and trotting back to his mates side.

Nightstar opened her eyes and gazed up at the mare said to be her aunt. Her body was shaking as well. Stardust lay down on the other side of her little sister. "Hi Nightstar" she said. "I'm one of your big sisters, Stardust." she said, nuzzling her small sister. "You have to get strong for mom, and me, and Beauty, and dad." she said. "Beauty can't wait to meet you." Stardust said. "The only thing she's been talking about is teaching you how to play tag." she nickered, nuzzling her sister again. "So please get stronger." she begged

Rusty gave an abrupt nod and raced back to the forest. A couple minutes later he came out again with a couple branches of bright berries, placing them beside midnight and racing to the river, returning with some extremely large leaves, and some soaked moss. Placing it all on the ground, he cast about for a rock, finding a slab and taking the berries over. Sitting them down he crushed them carefully with his nose and hooves, then pushed them onto a leaf in a pile. Bringing it back over to Midnight, whom he was glad to see was attempting to nibble at the grass, he dribbled water into the mixture. "Ok Midnight, I need you to suck this in. You can just swallow it, you don't even have to chew" he said gently, nosing the leaf towards her with the mash on it.

Twilight looked up as Specks approached, eyes extremely worried. Midnight had to keep eating, she just had to. Feeling a movement at her side, she looked down into two large eyes staring up at her. "Hello Nightstar" she said gently, glancing over as Stardust lay on the fillies other side. "Yes, rest and get strong, let the sun soak into your coat, your mama will be able to feed you again soon" she said, hoping it was true.

Midnight nodded and she took the herbs swallowing them. She kept eating, munching on the grass. "I can't eat anymore." she said. Specks looked at Rusty, hoping that was ok. "ok" he said, helping her to lay down again. She pressed herself against him and then looked up at Rusty. "Rusty" she whispered. "if I die...." Specks cut her off. "don't talk like that" he said. Midnight nuzzled him slightly but continued. "if I die, please tell twilight I love her." she said, her voice breaking. "and tell her how much she meant to me." she bent her head and grabbed some more grass. "i'm gonna try to get better though." she promised.

Stardust waited until her sister had fallen asleep again. "What if mom can't feed her again? what if mom never feeds her again? what if she dies?" she said to her aunt

Rusty sighed but nodded as Midnight lay down once again. His eyes widened as Midnight suddenly started talking, rather on the downside of things. "Hey, you aren't going to die. You'll be just fine. But if makes you feel better, then yes, I promise, although she already knows you know" he said gently.

Twilight frowned at Stardust. "Your mom will be just fine, she's tough. She'll be able to feed the filly, don't you worry, and they'll both be fine. And once Oreo has her foal, she can help by feeding Nightstar if needed." she added.

Midnight nickered softly. "thanks" she said, as she ate some more. "Can we go back now?" she asked. "I'm feeling tired." she said, trying to stand up. Specks helped her up and looked at Rusty. "She can eat by Nightstar as well if needed." Specks said. With the help of Rusty and Specks, they walked back to Twilight and Nightstar and Stardust. Stardust nodded and hugged her aunt. "I know" she said. Stardust looked up when she herd hoofbeats. "MOM!" She said, getting to her feet and running over, hugging her. Midnight smiled, hugging her daughter back. She lay down beside Nightstar and munched on some more grass before closing her eyes and falling asleep

Rusty nodded "Yes, she can" he agreed, helping her up and over. Twilight looked up as she heard slow hoof beats, a smile spreading over her muzzle of relief as she saw Midnight walking over. She moved a bit so Midnight could lay next to her new daughter, getting to her feet to graze for a few minutes, after all she had a little one to feed as well, before laying back down beside her.

Midnight's eyes shot open later in the night. Her heart was pounding, and she was sweating. "SPECKS???" She called. Specks looked up and over at his mate. "Midnight" he said. "What's wrong?" he asked. "Nightstar" Midnight mumbled. "where is she?" she asked. Looking around franticly for her tiny filly. "Honey, calm down. Nightstar is right next to you." Specks said. Midnight looked over and saw Nightstar curled up next to her. "I need to feed her." Midnight said. "now?" Specks asked. "its almost dawn, go back to sleep" Specks urdged. "no" Midnight said. "I haven't fed her since she was born, I need to feed her." Specks shrugged but nodded. "If you insist." He helped Midnight to her feet, and then nudged his tiny filly. Nightstar opened her little eyes and gazed around. "hi my sweet filly, its your dada. Come on, Mama's gonna feed you." he said, nudging her to her tiny and weak feet. She stumbled over to Midnight's belly and latched on, beginning to suckle. Midnight let out a breath of relief and she nuzzled Nightstar as she nursed

Twilight cracked an eye open as she felt movement beside her, and heard whispered words. Lifting her head she saw Midnight standing with the help of Specks as Nightstar wobbled over and began nursing. She smiled lightly to herself, laying her head back down but keeping an eye on the two.
