Twilight nodded "of course, give her a little rest time, she learned a lot this morning already!" she said, then nuzzled her sister again, blowing out in a calming manner. "Hey, Midnight, it'll be ok, she'll be ok. She's stronger than she looks because she has your spirit. I can tell. And yes, that would be a perfect way to teach her. And you know i'll help, and Beauty, and Nutmeg! We're all here for her and you" she said, giving her a hug.
Nutmeg sighed "I don't know..." she said, trailing off.

Midnight smiled returning her sisters hug. "thanks Twily" she nickered, "but I still don't know if she'll understand what im saying..." midnight muttered in a still worried tone. "what if she can never talk?" she asked, just as she did, Nightstars eyes fluttered open and she gazed around. "Hi Nightstar" Midnight nickered. "I'm your mama" she said. "can you say mama?" she asked. "M...A...M...A" Midnight broke down the word into chunks, saying it to Nightstar. "Can you say it?" she asked again. Nightstar just lay there, staring up at Midnight. "its no use" Midnight said with a sigh.
Beauty sighed. "Will she ever talk?" she asked

Twilight smiled "It'll take time" She said softly as Midnight tried. "You just have to give her time and keep trying" she said, moving forward a bit and nuzzling Nighstar. "Hey Sweetie. This is your MAMA. Mmmmmmmm Aaaaaaaa Mmmmmmm Aaaaa" she said, drawing out each letter and moving her mouth slowly. "Can you the same thing with your mouth?" she asked gently, repeating the motions.
Nutmeg nodded vigorously "Oh definitely!" she said.

Nightstar focused, and then she shook her head. "thats ok" Midnight said, although she wasn't sure if she meant it. With a sigh, she kept trying just as Stardust came trotting up. "whatcha doing?" she asked. "we're trying to teach Stardust to talk" Midnight said. "Can I help?" she asked. Midnight nodded. "we're working on mama right now." Midnight said. Stardust nodded and she lay down beside her sister. "Hi Nightstar" she said. "this is our MAMA." she said, pointing with her tail towards Midnight. "can you say mmmmmmmmm aaaaaaaa mmmmmmmm aaaaaa?" she asked, moving her mouth in the motions of the word. "come on, you can do it" Stardust said. Nightstar thought again and then shook her head. "maybe...we try another word?" she asked.
Beauty looked at her father. "Can we go back now?" she asked. Specks sighed. "what did your mom say?" he asked. "well...it was Aunt Twilight who told us to leave...and she told us to stay." Specks nodded. "ok, then no" he said

Twilight sighed slightly but nodded "It's ok sweetie, good try" she said, seeing that Nighstar really had thought about it. A niggling thought jumped into her head. If Nighstar could convey no... and wasn't really trying to move her mouth... could she possibly just not WANT to speak? it was a curious thought, and she moved back slightly as Stardust came and started to try. But Nightstar just shook her head again. "Maybe try her name?" Twilight suggested. "You are Nightstar. Nnnn iii t eeeee ssss t aaaaa rrr" she tried. This time, instead of compassionate hope, she was looking at the filly with a searching gaze. She could see the intelligence in the small eyes... surely the filly could just try moving her mouth?
Nutmeg glanced back, then nodded "Yeah we should probably just stay around here for a bit." she agreed.

Nightstar thought for a moment before she opened her mouth. "N-N-N-n-i-g-h-t" Nightstar managed to speak. "S-S-S-S-t-a-r" she said, finishing her name. She looked around and could see pure joy in her mother and sisters eyes. "yes!" Stardust said. "now try my name Ssssssss T aaaaa rrrrrr Ddddddd uuuuuuu sssssss t" Stardust said, hopefully. "N-N-N-N-I-G-H-T S-S-S-S-T-A-R" Nightstar stuttered again. "well...thats something" Midnight said, her eyes glowing. "she's saying letters right now, but she's not really talking yet" she said. "but she's getting there!" a new glimmer of hope flashed in her eyes.
Beauty sighed and she watched her family. "please dad! It looks like they're trying to teach Nightstar to talk" Beauty said. Specks sighed. "alright, we can" he said

Twilight's eyes widened "Yes sweetie, yes!" she said, eagerly looking over at Midnight and smiling. "I knew she could do it!! And she certainly seems to like the sound of her name" she said with a chuckle. "Now, you are Nightstar, this is MMM AAA MMM AAA" she tried again, hoping the first success may have loosened the fillies boundaries.

Nightstar closed her eyes and thought for a moment. "M-M-M-M-A-M-A" Nightstar said, opening her eyes. Midnights eyes sparkled. "N-N-N-N-I-G-H-T S-S-S-T-A-R" Nightstar stuttered, smiling. She looked over at her aunt and tilted her head. "Thats your aunt Twilight. AAAA UUUU NNNN TTTT TTTT WWWWW IIIII LLLL YYYY" Midnight said. Nightstar thought hard but she didn't look like she could say a word that hard quite yet, she shook her head. "M-M-M-M-A-M-A" She said

Twilight grinned as the filly carefully began speaking, the syllables coming together. Leaning forward she nuzzled the filly "Well done sweetie! And that's ok, my name is a bit hard to say" she said with a chuckle, then turned to give Midnight a hug. "See? She's talking!" she said.

"Yea, she's kinda talking." Midnight said. "she's just speaking out letters, its not really talking" Midnight admitted. "Stardust, try to get her to say your name, maybe start with star since she already knows that" Midnight suggested. "Ok" Stardust said. "Can you say Star?" Stardust asked her little sister "SSSSS TTTT AAA RRR" Stardust said. Nightstar thought hard. "S-S-S-S-T-A-R-D-U-S-T" Nightstar said. Stardust gasped. "wow, i didn't even say dust." Stardust said. "Well she herd me say it." Midnight added.

Twilight smiled "Well it still counts as talking" she pointed out, looking back over at the filly. "And she's so smart too! Look at that!" she said happily. "Now all we have to work on is getting her to turn it into a word now that she's got the sounds!" she said.

"A-A-U-N-T T-T-T-T-W-I-L-L-L-L-L-L-Y" Nightstar stuttered once more. "did you hear that?" Beauty asked as she came trotting up. "SHE'S TALKING!!" Beauty squealed. "Meg, Dad! Nightstar! She's saying letters!!" Beauty said. Specks smiled. "well look at that." Specks said, trotting over to nuzzle his filly. "give her some space" Midnight said. Every lay down a few feet away from Nightstar and waited. "Now try Beauty." Stardust said. "BBBBBBB EEEEEEE AAAAAA UUUUUU TTTTTTT YYYYY" Stardust broke down her sisters name for her littlest sister, hoping she would get it. "N-N-N-I-G-H-T-S-S-S-T-T-T-A-R" Nightstar said

Twilight beamed, looking up as Beauty, Nutmeg, and Specks trotted over. Nutmeg gave a delighted whinny and trotted over, laying down beside her mother and nuzzling her, then looking at Nighstar in wonder. "She's talking! Sort of" she said. Twilight smiled and nodded, watching as Stardust attempted to teach Nighstar Beauty's name. She chuckled slightly "Nighstar seems to be more preferable to her" she said grinning, then adding "And Beauty has a lot of harder letters in it, like b, t and y.

"We should try dada now" Stardust suggested. "dad, what you do is lay near her and break up the word into its letters." Stardust explained to her father. Specks nodded and came walking over, laying down beside Midnight. "Hi Nightstar" Specks said. "N-N-N-N-I-G-H-T-S-S-S-T-A-R" Nightstar stuttered. Specks laughed. "well for one thing, I think Twilight is right about her own name being preferable to her." He said. "Nightstar" Specks said again. Nightstar looked at him. "I'm your dada" he said. "can you say dada? DDDDDDD AAAAAAAAA DDDDDD AAAA?" He broke up the words into its letters just like Stardust said to do. "D-D-D-D-D-A-D-A" Nightstar said. Midnights eyes glowed. "now we just need to turn those letters into words." Midnight said. "mom, why won't she say my name?" Beauty asked. "well, like your aunt said, Beauty has a lot harder letters in it, and she hasn't learned B and Y yet." Midnight said

Twilight smiled as she watched Nighstar apparently introduce herself to her father, then slowly say the affectionate word, although broken down. Glancing over at Beauty she smiled "She'll get it soon, don't worry!" she said, then turned to Nighstar. "Ok Nightstar, now try this. D A, DA" she tried, slowing it down but running the last two letters together.
