Midnight sighed, knowing her sister was right. "Look" she said. "I know you may not like this, but I've been thinking.." she mumbled. "That...maybe...its time that we give eachother some space." Midnight said. "like...we take our family and live somewhere else in the herd" she admitted. "but, I only think this...because we can't sleep side by side forever, eventually...we'll have to spread out." she said. Midnight took a shaky breath. That was the hardest thing she had ever had to say, especially to her sister, who she loved so much. "and you know I love you, and our girls growing up beside eachother is like a dream come true, but I just think...its best if we start to think about something like that." she said. Her heart broke into a thousand pieces. She was the type of horse who loved being close to her sister, but it would eventually have to be done.

Beauty nodded and bent her head, beginning to graze beside her cousin and sister

Twilight's ears pinned and her heart constricted. Give her sister... space? Even when she'd stayed by her sister for all the nights she was pregnant, and beyond... her sister wanted to move away while SHE was pregnant. For a moment she couldn't speak, her throat choked up at the thought of them separated. With a hard swallow, and just barely keeping the tears from her eyes, she looked straight at Midnight, and said in a soft, slightly unemotional voice "If that's what you think would be best for you and your family, I respect your decision. You can move whenever you want, I would never hold you back from what you think your family needs." she said, trying not to let her voice tremble at the thought of giving birth without Midnight by her side. At least Nutmeg wouldn't have a problem racing across the herd to her cousins. That was good. And songbird was grown now, so that would be ok. She didn't understand why Midnight couldn't keep sleeping near her... although she was trying to. She knew they couldn't stay sleeping side by side, that was obvious.. but separate their families? But if that was what Midnight wanted, she would push her own feelings down. Her sister always came first. Always. With a slight smile she added "I'm ok with whatever you decide, and I will understand" she said, hoping she WOULD eventually understand. Truthfully though, she was shattered and crushed. She had mistakenly always assumed that as long as she was there for her sister, the support would be reciprocated, but the hard truth was now slammed in her face, and she either had to accept it, or be crushed.

Midnight felt tears weld in her eyes. Her sister showed no emotion. She knew this wasn't what she wanted, she swallowed hard. "Its not me who thinks we should move." she admitted, the tears falling down her face. "Its Specks." her voice broke. "He..twily...he thinks we shouldn't sleep near you anymore because...because he thinks we're inseparable." she mumbled, pressing herself into her sister. "you have to show you that he's wrong." she said. "i can't live without you. I love sleeping beside you and its my favorite thing, waking up and seeing you beside me." she said, more tears falling down her face. "Twilight..." she said. "i love you more than words can describe. But this was all Specks. I swear." she said, sobbing now. "I need to talk to him. Please know, that no matter what, I will make sure we stay side by side." she promised, cantering to find her mate. When she finally found him, she pinned her ears at him. "Woah, whats wrong sweetie?" he asked. "HOW DARE YOU MAKE ME TELL TWILIGHT I WANT TO MOVE AWAY FROM HER." Midnight snapped. "I just thought it was the best thing for our family." Specks admitted. "Yea? Well the best thing for our family, for me, is to be with my sister. So DON'T you EVER tell me that I have to tell Twilight we need to separate from eachother." Midnight said to him. Specks pinned his ears. "honey..." he said. Midnight slapped him with her tail. "I love you, you know that. But you will NEVER tell me to leave my Sisters side." she said, turning to run back to Twilight, tears streaming down her face. "MID! Wait" Specks said, going after her. Midnight spun around to face him. "what?" she snapped. "I'm sorry" he said. Midnight looked at him. "If you're sorry, you'll say it to Twilight, not me." she said, turning to go back to her sister. "Please Twily." she said. "Know that I NEVER chose to do that. It was Specks" she said, crying. "He told me he thought it was the best thing for our family, and I told him that if he knew what the best thing for our family was, then he would know to let us stay with you." she said, hugging her. "please..." she whispered. "Twilight...please know that i'm not going anywhere." she said.

Twilight's resolve burst and she nuzzled her sister, tears spilling from her eyes. "Mid, I" was all she had time to say before her sister suddenly whirled and cantered off to find her mate. Twilight winced slightly. She could imagine that Specks was about to get quite the tongue lashing. When Midnight came back, she quickly gave her a strong hug in return. "Hey, woah there, I understand. I knew it would never ever be you that would want to move, I knew that" she said gently. "I'm so glad that you want to stay by my side as much as I by yours, and you know I love you more than anyone in this world" she said, nuzzling her. "But, i do think that I understand Specks as well, although i obviously don't agree with him. I think he's remembering the times before when we would sleep in our own family huddles, but still near each other. Maybe he just wants a few days of alone time with you since you just had your foal? He probably wants to just be with you, and sleep beside you as your mate" she said with a gentle smile. "I obviously don't want you to move one inch from my side, but you still have to remember your mate, he loves you so much, i know he does, and he probably just wants to be with you!" she said.

“Well…he could’ve just said that instead of trying to convince me to move away from you” midnight said. “But…I don’t think I want to be with anyone but you right now” she said. “And I understand that if we’re sleeping side by side and specks is there…he’ll feel uncomfortable.” She said. “Look, if we sleep in our own family huddles, I won’t feel your pelt beside mine, I woke be able to lay my head on your back” midnight said. “And of course, I love him, but you, you’re my sister, I love you more than anyone besides mom” she said jokingly. “I gues….I’ll sleep beside specks tonight like normal again…but…I just want to feel your pelt next to mine…that’s…that’s all” she said.

Twilight smiled and nuzzled her again "I feel the same of course, but I know that Rusty has also been wanting to spend some time with me, just us two with Nutmeg and Songbird before the foal is born" she said gently. "of course i would prefer to sleep beside you right now.. but I know he loves me, and I do love him, and I do want to spend some time with him as well. How about tonight we both sleep with our own little families, and then tomorrow night we can sleep back together?" she asked, then added "But you'd better not forget to wake me up still!" with a smile.

“I guess we can do that” midnight said. But she knew she just wanted to feel her sisters pelt against hers. Sometimes, it’s how she made it through the night. But, it was time she slept beside Specks again. “If you think I’ll forget to wake you up” midnight said, laughing. “You’ve got another thing coming” she nudged her sister and gave her a hug. “I don’t understand why our mates can’t just allow us to sleep beside eachother. I mean sure, they’re our mates, but we’re sisters, we should be allowed to sleep with eachother.” Midnight said to twilight

Twilight smiled "Good!" she said, then she sighed and returned her hug. "Well yes, but they love us so much, and they want to spend a little alone time with us. Plus they're guys who never had any siblings really, so you can't quite expect them to understand the sibling relationship" she said with a chuckle.

"yea...thats true" Midnight said.

Once the sun went down and the herd settled in for the night, Nightstar nursed one more time before she went to sleep for the night. Midnight trotted over to Twilight and she gave her a big hug. "Sleep well" she said. "I'll see you in the morning." then, she trotted back to Specks and settled herself down beside him. Stardust was sleeping on one side of Nightstar, Beauty on her other. Specks and Midnight in the middle. Midnight nuzzled Specks. "good night Specks." she nickered. "Good night my love." he said, hugging her before he closed his eyes. Midnight watched the starts for a while longer before she put her head on Specks' back and closed her eyes. Midnight felt like she had barley slept when she was being bumped in the side. "hmm?" she groaned. "M-mama." Nightstar stuttered. "M-m-m-m-m-i-l-k." she said. Midnight raised her head. "now?" Midnight asked. "It's the middle of the night, go back to sleep." she said, almost begging Nightstar to listen. "M-M-M-M-M-I-L-K!" Nightstar said louder. "shhh" Midnight said. She needed to wake someone up to help Nightstar stand to her feet. She gazed around, but every horse was in a deep sleep. She hoped Twilight wasn't in a deep sleep.

Twilight smiled and nodded encouragingly, then dropped her head to graze for a bit.

When nightime arrived, Twilight was still hanging around Midnight and Nightstar, looking up as Midnight came trotting over and returning her hug. "Good night sis, you sleep well too" she said softly, watching as her sister trotted a ways off to her family. With a light sigh she lay down, neighing for Nutmeg, Rusty, and Songbird. The three came, Nutmeg quickly and snuggling up beside her mother, Rusty behind her and laying on her other side, eyes shining with love as he nuzzled her. Songbird was last in coming, and looking rather downcast. Apparently, Buttermilk had not asked her yet. Why, Twilight had no idea, but it was really because Songbird had spent the entire day with her grandmother, listening to her advice on life. Settled with her family, she snuggled into Rusty's side, laying her head on his shoulder as he nuzzled her. "Good night, my sweet mare" he said softly. She smiled "Good night my handsome stallion" she whispered back, closing her eyes to sleep. Although she drifted off quickly, sleep was rather light, and she kept jerking awake, mostly from the increasingly frequent kicking. Why was the foal choosing tonight to kick so much? With a tired sigh she tried to fall back to sleep.

"M-M-M-M-I-L-K!!" Nightstar said even louder. "ok ok" Midnight said in a hushed voice. "you need to quite down." she said, but Nightstar didn't understand as she once more said milk louder than before. Midnight kept jerking her head around to make sure no one was waking up. Good. No horse stirred. Midnight sleepily got to her feet and wondered how on earth she would get Nightstar to her feet. "M-MAMA!!" Nightstar almost wailed. "M-M-M-M-M-M-I-L-K!!!" She said. Midnight closed her eyes and took in a long sigh. Why did Nightstar choose the middle of the night to be hungry? Midnight wondered. How would she get Nightstar to her feet. Midnight looked around once more. She could try waking up Specks, but that would be no use as he was a very heavy sleeper. Most of her family was a heavy sleeper, the only horse that she almost begged to be awake at this time of night, was Twilight.

Twilight was just settling down, her foal finally silent as she'd changed position slightly, when a slight wail caught her ears and she twitched. With a slight groan, she lifted her head and glanced around. The entire herd was silent and still... except Midnight who was standing, looking around the herd. And another wail came from where she was standing. Ohhh Nightstar! Of course. She slowly hefted herself to her hooves and carefully stepped out of the family huddle, walking over to her sister and nuzzling her. "Need any help?" she whispered quietly.

Midnight was looked down at Nightstar who was beginning to wail again when she herd hoof beats. Oh no. She thought. If Specks woke up he is going to be so grumpy. But when Midnight looked up, she smiled. Her sister had come to help. Thank you Epona. Midnight said silently. "Yea" Midnight whispered back. "She's hungry and...I don't know if I can get her to her feet by myself." She said. "I need to be standing when she stands up so she can nurse, but you know how grumpy Specks gets if he's woken up in the middle of the night." Midnight said. "But I couldn't keep her quiet while I tried to think of how to get her to her feet." she said. Then she realized that her sister was awake. "did she wake you?" Midnight asked, afraid her answer would be yes.

Twilight smiled "Of course i can help you" she said teaching down to help the little filly stumble to her feet, then glancing up at Midnight at her question, supporting the filly with her legs and shoulder. "Oh no, I was hardly sleeping anyway" she said with a rueful smile.

Midnight glanced at her sister when Nightstar started nursing. "thats not like you" she said. "everything ok with your little foal?" she asked. She had a feeling it had something to do with the foal kicking, but Midnight wasn't sure. Specks groaned and picked his head up. "Whats going on?" he asked. "oh...im so sorry specks" she said. "Nightstar got hungry, so I'm just feeding her. You can go back to sleep." she said. Specks groaned again and nodded, closing his eyes and going back to sleep. "told ya" Midnight whispered
