Twilight nodded and followed her sister, snuggling close to her as she lay down and slowly fell asleep.
She awoke to movement next to her as Midnight got up, stretching and following suit as she rose to her hooves, pawing slightly at the ground in hopes of a small snack, but none availed itself. She snorted in disappointment, but nodded "Yeah, i can see that" she said wryly. "Alright, let's get going then" she agreed, taking high steps to avoid getting caught in the snow as her hooves broke the crusty ice layer on top. How much longer would they have to journey to find their home?
(that sounds good to me!! Haha, i'm going to totally have to try remembering how my fillies acted, and how old they're gonna be now....)

By the time the sun was at the highest point in the sky, Midnight's head was watching the ground with every step she took. Her ears pinned back against the cold wind, another shiver passing through her body as she walked beside Twilight. She did look up every once and a while, but never saw any horses, or herd any neighing. Would they find their herd before spring? Or would they get farther away from them? Midnight wondered. Beauty was playing in the snow beside her older sister and stopped when she herd something. She looked up and her eyes grew wide in amazement. "MAMA!!" She squealed happily, seeing the sight of her mother and aunt walking towards them, their heads down towards the ground. Specks looked at his youngest daughter. "no honey, your mama isn't here, remember?" he said, his heart breaking as he remembered his mate being taken away. "no!" Beauty said. "look!" Specks turned to where his filly was looking and his heart swelled with joy. "Midnight" he breathed. Stardust stopped playing and looked out. "MAMA!!!" She squealed loudly. Midnights ears pricked and she picked up her head. What she saw made her so happy. "Twilight" Midnight said. "Look"

Twilight shuddered as a cold wind blasted against them, her head ducked against it as she fought her way through the snow beside her sister. She had started out feeling chipper enough that morning... but now... she gave a sigh and closed her eyes for a moment in despair. Had she just led her sister to a life of loneliness? Should they have stayed at the barn? And then suddenly a squeal broke her thoughts, and her eyes snapped open. That had sounded familiar. She raised her head at her sister's joyful voice. And her eyes widened. "Is it.. can it be?" she whispered in disbelief, not believing her own eyes. "It can't be" she said, trying not to get her hopes up.
Across the herd, a young mare lifted her head, her ears pricking and nose raising as she inhaled deeply. Could it be?? She didn't dare to hope. Turning, Songbird raced through the herd, searching for her father and younger sister. Even if it was just a fluke... Nutmeg suddenly appeared in front of her, the yearling tossing her head and grinning at her older sister. "Who're you racing?" she asked teasingly. Songbird didn't even care about the teasing, a hopeful smile lighting her face. "I... Just smell the air" she said after a pause of uncertainty. Nutmeg looked at her quizzically, then lifted her muzzle, scenting the air. Her eyes widened dramatically. "Is that... Mama?" she whispered, suddenly looking like a little filly again. Songbird nuzzled her "I'm hoping" she said softly, then asked "Where's Dad?". "I think he's out on patrol, you know he likes to do that now" she said in a sad tone. "Ok, well let's go see if we're right then!" Songbird said, impatiently wheeling and bolting off through the herd. A few seconds later Nutmeg raced up beside her, snow churning in their wake as the two speedy fillies sped over the ground, heading for the warm, familiar, hopeful scent.

Beauty and Stardust broke into a run beside their cousins. The two mares became closer and now, Beauty was absolutely sure it was her mother and aunt. Stardust looked at her little sister. "good going sis" she said, giving her a nudge. Beauty glanced at her sister, who was now a gown mare.
Four horses started racing towards them. As they got closer, Midnight broke into a run herself. They had done it. They had found their herd. "Beauty!! Stardust!!" Midnight squealed, slowing to a trot as she came up to her daughters. She nuzzled each of them for a good 5 mins before she picked up her head and glanced around. Specks was walking towards her, Rusty at his side. She felt a small tear roll down her face. They waited. She left her daughters and cantered up to her mate, pressing herself into his neck. Their daughters watched in happiness. "What's going on?" a voice said. Midnight recognized her little sister at once, but she was to distracted with her mate. After a few moments she herd Starlight call. "MIDNIGHT AND TWILIGHT ARE HOME!!" Horses came running and were crowding around them. Midnight stepped back and saw her parents gazing at them. "My girls" Sunlight said, nuzzling both her daughters. After their reunion, Midnight felt herself grow very tired. "you need rest" oreo said to the two sisters.

Twilight couldn't believe her eyes as the four cousins raced towards them. Shaking herself out of her shock she leapt forward, only stopping when she felt her daughter's nuzzling her. "Songbird, Nutmeg" she breathed, deeply inhaling their scents as she nuzzled them both over and over, tears flowing down her cheeks. "Oh you both have grown into beautiful mares!" she said, her breath hiccuping slightly as she took a step back, then nuzzled them again. "Mama, we missed you so much!!" Nutmeg snuffled, leaning into her mother. Songbird was quieter, but her eyes said it all as she gazed at her mother in love. "Where's your father?" she asked them both, until she heard Midnight cantering by her. Her eyes followed her sister as her daughters quickly moved aside, and suddenly she found herself breathing in Rusty's scent as he hugged her to him, his eyes wide in disbelief. "Twilight!! You found your way back!" She gave a watery laugh, pressing herself into him then nipping his mane "Of course I did, I wasn't going to let you have all the fun of raising our two daughters!" she said, then burst into tears again and he pulled her back to him as Songbird and Nutmeg raced up, pressing themselves into their parents. A voice called out loudly, announcing them and she looked over to see their younger sister... and promptly burst into tears again, pressing her face into her mate... her mate. She was back, she was home. Horses began to crowd around them, some familiar, others not, but she didn't really recognize any of them, too caught up with her own family. "Twilight" Rusty said softly in her ear, and she looked up, he smiled, then motioned for her to look forward. Her breath hitched again and she cantered to her mother, nuzzling her. "Mom, we missed you so much" she said, then turned to her father, nuzzling him as he hugged her hard. Her eyes were finally dry when they had all finished greeting each other, but she still felt rather weak, both from not eating that morning, and the emotional and physical strain she'd been under. She looked over as Oreo spoke in her sensible tone, smiling in greeting at her as she nodded, meeting Rusty's eyes. "Yes, we definitely do, we've been traveling for so long" she said, leaning into her mate wearily.

Midnight nodded tiredly. "come" Oreo said. She led the way to a tree that some how still had its leaves. Midnight settled herself down on the ground and watched as her sister followed suit. Yawning, Midnight watched as her mate settled himself beside her and their daughters around them. Her eyes slowly closed and she felt herself lay her head on her mates back. Finally, they were home. With their families. But, one small part of her missed the warmth of the barn, the endless food and water, and even her caretaker. She could feel herself inch away from Specks while she slept and inched closer to twilight. The only thing Midnight knew for the last 9 months was her sister, and a barn. She felt closer to Twilight now then she ever had before. Midnight hoped that them being home again wouldn't change a thing.

Twilight wearily followed her sister and Oreo to the tree, laying down nearby as Rusty lay down beside her, taking the brunt of the wind, her daughters on the other side. A smile slid across her face as she lay her head familiarly on Rusty's neck, sighing with sudden relief. Now she could relax. No longer was she worried about taking care of herself and her sister, finding them food or water or shelter. She was home. Everything would be ok now. As she was drifting off to sleep a cold, sharp wind picked up and she shivered again, for a moment remembering the warmth of the barn before angrily shaking herself out of it. The barn was in the past now, she was home, and even if it took her months, she'd re-learn how to be wild. Because she was. Down to the bone. Again she drifted off to sleep, but it was as if her past was haunting her as she sudden sweet taste of grain seemed to linger in her mouth. She chomped for a second, but closed down on empty air, the taste disappearing. She frowned at herself, ears flattening. She didn't need the barn, or her caretaker, or the grain. Grass was wonderful, along with fruit, and here she could eat as much of it as she wanted, and be outside all day, and, most importantly, be with her family. Firmly, she closed her eyes, snuggling more into Rusty as she dozed off. Hopefully later she'd be able to actually talk with her family, see what had gone in the months she'd missed. But now, it was time to sleep.

After a while Midnight opened her eyes and she looked around. The herd had gone about their own things again. The only horses around her were Twilight, Rusty, Songbird and Nutmeg, her daughters, Specks, and their parents. Suddenly, a mare came trotting over to where she was laying. She watched as Specks' ears went flat against his head and Stardust and Beauty inched closer to Midnight. "Specks" the mare said. "what are you doing?" she asked. Midnight looked over at Specks. He looked at Midnight and then the mare. "Im..." he stuttered. "I'm laying with my mate to keep her warm while she sleeps." Midnight smiled and nuzzled him. "She's not your mate" the mare said. "I am" Midnights smile instantly faded. She stood up and looked at Specks as he stood up as well. "what is she talking about?" she demanded. "Midnight....I can explain" he said. Midnight glared at him. "ok, then do it, explain." he sighed. "I didn't think you were coming back." he said. "so...i..." Midnights heart sank. "so you replaced me." she answered for him. He nodded slightly. "we don't like her" Beauty piped in. Midnight felt a tear rolling down her face. "I never stopped thinking about you" Midnight said. He sighed slightly, and Midnight closed her eyes. Just then, they jerked open. "you ok my love?" Specks asked her. Midnight looked at him and then for the mare she had seen. "yea...bad dream i guess." she said. He nuzzled her. "im right here" he said.
(lol, i made it seem real, she was dreaming)

Twilight woke slowly to the feeling of a light nuzzle on her neck. Her eyes drifted open, expecting to see Midnight. An immediate smile flashed over her muzzle as she saw Rusty's loving eyes staring into hers. "How's my gorgeous, brave mare?" he asked softly. "Much better" she replied, nuzzling him in return. "I could use some food though" she said, her stomach growling at her. Glancing around she could see her mother and father grazing nearby. Her daughters lay next to her, and Midnight and Specks with their daughters were laying nearby. Rusty smiled "I can take you to the best grazing spot we have here if you want then!" he said, she smiled and nodded, reaching over to nuzzle Nutmeg and Songbird awake so she could get up. "Mama?" nutmeg said sleepily, snuggling into her. She laughed, nuzzling her again. "Yes honey, i'm right here" she responded. Songbird smiled at her, nuzzling her in a rather grown up manner, then getting to her hooves. A slight flush rose on her cheeks as she glanced at Rusty, then back at Twilight. "I..I'm gonna go... look around" she said, pausing in her speech, her tail swishing slightly nervously behind her. Twilight tilted her head, slightly confused, but nodded in allowance, Rusty speaking up from beside her in an odd tone "Come back for supper, ok?" She nodded, nuzzling them both one more time before cantering off into the herd. Hmmm... a sneaking suspicion tickled the edges of Twilight's mind, but she brushed them off. There hadn't been any colts in the herd when they'd been there... well besides Spirit's offspring of course. This would be something to discuss with Rusty, and Midnight. Speaking of her sister... she glanced over "Midnight, Rusty and I were going to go graze, do you two want to come with us?" she asked, getting up and walking over to nuzzle her sister lovingly. She knew she wouldn't have made it through the past months without her, and having been captured together had only strengthened the sisterly bond felt with Midnight.

Midnights mind was whirling with the dream she had just had. "what?" she said, snapping back to reality. "uh..yea..sure" she stuttered. Specks nuzzled their daughters softly before they stood up as well. Stardust trotted up to her mother and trust her in a big hug. "i missed you" she said, eyes full of love. Midnight smiled slightly, her mind still full of her dream. "i missed all of you." she said, turning toward her sister, she trotted up to her. Stardust glanced at beauty and titled her head slightly, she thought nothing of it and followed her parents to the grazing grounds. Midnight bent her head and began to munch on some grass beside her sister. Why was her mind still full of that dream. "Can I go play in the snow?" Beauty asked. Midnight barley herd her. "mama" Beauty said. Midnight looked up. "hm?" she muttered. "can i go play?" she asked again. Midnight nodded slightly before going back to her grazing

Twilight smiled softly and followed Rusty as he led her over to a grazing spot that had been cleared of snow, bending her head to hungrily rip the grass from the earth. Unintentionally, she found herself frowning as she compared it to the pasture at the barn. That one had had sweet grass... but of course it was winter, so the grass was tougher out here, she reminded herself. Hearing Beauty ask Midnight a question, and she glanced up, surprised when Midnight didn't seem to hear her, and the filly had to repeat herself. She frowned. Something was up with Midnight. Nuzzling Rusty she whispered quietly to him "I need to talk to my sister for a minute" he looked mildly disappointed, but nodded, nuzzling her back. "I understand. I'll be here, waiting." he said, a soft smile spreading over his muzzle. Yes, he had waited for her. She couldn't have asked for a better mate. Nutmeg bumped her with her nose, getting her attention. "What is it Nutmeg?" she asked with a smile, not used to being a mother again. "Can I go play too?" she asked. "Of course! Go on, have fun with your cousin" she said with a smile, watching as she scampered off. Walking forward she sidled up to her sister as Rusty motioned for Specks to go with him, leaving them some privacy. "Hey, Mid, what's wrong?" she asked gently, nuzzling her.
(So.. about our mares xD. I mean the daughter mares. Songbird and Stardust. What's our plan with them? Ofc Songbird found herself a stallion, but they aren't mates yet, but idk what stallion it should be. If i wanna do drama, then it could be Spirit's colt.. or just a loner that came into the herd. What's your plan with Stardust?)

Midnight stopped eating and glanced at her sister. "I had a bad dream...like...a really bad dream" She closed her eyes slightly. "In my dream, I woke up and a mare was walking towards us. She started talking to Specks and then he told her what he was doing. And then she said that she was his mate. Oh Twilight, i had a dream he replaced me. What if its true? What if some mare is just waiting for the perfect moment to come up and announce that shes his mate?" Midnight heaved a big sigh. "what if we made the wrong choice coming home?"
(for Stardust...I was thinking a loner horse that joined, it would make for more drama if your daughter was in love with spirits son)

Twilight's ears pinned and she snorted hard. "Midnight, wake up. Your life is not a bad dream. It's not a dream. It's real. Specks loves you, and he's waited for you. There isn't another mare. Stop doubting yourself!!! And no, we didn't make the wrong choice. Just look at our daughters, our mates, they've all waited for us. They've believed in us. It's time for us to believe in ourselves too" she said firmly.

Midnight was surprised by her sisters tone and she stepped back a bit but she nodded anyways and said. "you're right" she nuzzled her sister lovingly. "thanks twily" she nickered softly before she bent her head to graze again. Just then, out of no where, she herd the sound of hoof beats. She thought it was Beauty coming back but when she looked up, she saw Stardust. "I thought you were with your dad" Midnight said. She looked at her mother and then Twilight. "Aunt Twily...theres something you should know..but Songbird doesn't want you knowing." Midnight looked at her daughter. "if songbird doesnt want her knowing, don't say anything." Midnight said, but just as she did, Stardust blurted out. "Songbird likes Buttermilk...the son of Spirit and Diamond." Midnight looked at her sister. "oh my god..Twily..."

Twilight smiled, glad she'd reassured her sister, nuzzling her back then bending her head to graze some more, still hungry. Suddenly, Stardust sped up to them, looking a bit frazzled, as if she had something on her mind that she definitely had to say. A frown appeared on Twilight's face as she turned her full attention to her niece. Was something wrong with Songbird? Did she have an illness? What was it? And then... Stardust blurted it out. And she turned to stone. IT may have been years, but the memory was still strong. "If you choose him, then we're done. I'm not your friend, and I don't want to speak to you ever again" Spirits angry voice echoed through her head. She still saw him as he chose Diamond as his mate, only days after her denying him. He was a player, and a no good. "How..how" she mumbled. She'd promised herself, no matter what, she wouldn't let either of her daughters marry that low-life's son as soon as he was born. But then she'd been captured... but still, wouldn't Rusty have held to the promise? HE had known about it. To be related to that... that windbag of a stallion... to have to see him nuzzling HER daughter... It was too much." Her eyes snapped with sudden fire. "Stardust, where is she" she said, ignoring her sister. A fire was building in her. She wouldn't let Buttermilk hurt her daughter like he'd hurt her. Like Father, Like Son was the saying, and it wasn't known for nothing.
