Sugar took a long drink of water before she grazed for a while. When Artemis spoke to her, she sighed. “My mother” she finally said. “I the worst dream last night, and all I saw was my mother, hatred I’m her eyes” sugar said. “But, I know that if she didn’t want us to leave, she would never have let me go….she was never my mother” she said.

Galmúr drank his fill, then lifted his head, looking around thoughtfully, especially studying the route of the river. It seemed to lead on towards the west, but there was a chance perhaps that it turned to the south. Should they follow it when they left, or just head straight south and hope to find water once again? He frowned slightly, and as he was pondering this, a sudden thought flashed into his head. Just two days ago, he had been a carefree colt, who ran around pranking horses and not even considering the fact of where their water or safety came from. But now, here he was, standing watch through the night, finding them water, charting their path. For a moment he suddenly felt scared of this sudden change, and then a deep warmth spread through him as he looked up to the wide open sky. Freedom. That's what he'd been yearning forever. But not just freedom... a purpose as well. In the herd he had just been seen as a colt, who would grow up, find a mate, have a family, and die happy. But now.. now he had so much more! He had his two best friends beside him, relying on him to keep them safe and find them sustenance. A pride welled through him and he looked over to them, watching as Artemis moved closer to Sugar. His ears swiveled to catch their conversation, and just like that, he was no longer imaginary lead stallion, but he was back to being the young colt with his two friends. Walking over to them, he smiled gently at Sugar, but looked up to Artemis to answer the young fillies comment, as he wasn't quite the best in the comforting speech department.

''Oh, Sugar, She is your mother,'' Artemis said, ''and she loves you. No your mother did not want you to leave but she could not do anything about it, unless she were to get exiled too, which surely, Sugar, you would not have wanted that.''

Sugar shook her head. "no of course I wouldn't want that" She said as she nuzzled her friend. "now, i think that we found some water, we follow it so we always have a water source close by as we travel" she said with a small smile

Galmúr smiled gratefully to Artemis, knowing he never would have been able to figure out how to settle Sugar. At the younger member of their trio's words he nodded "I do agree, a water source is quite vital. But we need not follow it precisely, as it will bend and twist. Since it's only two days travel the forest, I say we follow it in the general southernly direction for today, and then just head straight for the woods tomorrow" he suggested, glancing to Artemis to see if she had an opinion on the subject.

Artemis nuzzled Sugar back, then listened to her friends' suggestions, ''that sounds good,'' she answered, ''lets go.''

Sugar nodded. "ok" she said cheerfully as she followed after her friends, sticking close to them as she didn't want to get lost.

Galmúr gave a pleased nod and began making his way along the edge of the forest, as it would be a faster route for the time being. Quickly he picked up a trot, glancing behind him to make sure the other two were staying close before focusing on his surroundings.

''So, do we have any long term plans, or are we just going to wander around aimlessly for the rest of our lives?'' Artemis asked as she trotted beside Galmúr and Sugar, she looked at her friends waiting for their responses.

"I don't know" Sugar admitted. "I'm the youngest...so I haven't really thought about the future" she admitted as she kept a good pace with her two best friends

Galmúr gave Artemis a thoughtful look, slowing slightly to answer "Well... I don't think we should wander around aimlessly, like right now we at least have a goal of getting to the forest. But you're right.. once we get there, what next?" he paused, the next thought that came to him not a welcome one. He grimaced slightly. "I suppose the smart thing to do would be to look for a herd..." he trailed off, the distaste for the idea clearly showing on his face. But at the same time, he knew it would be difficult to always have to look for water, and find food in the winter, and shelter, and keep them all safe from predators... but their experiences with herd life had not been good, to say the least.

Artemis was not at all enthusiastic about the prospect of finding another herd, but she remembered the security she felt in large numbers, and they had young Sugar to think about. Artemis decided to wait until the younger dappled filly spoke before voicing her opinion.

"another herd?" Sugar asked, her ears twitching slightly. "but what if they don't let us in..." she said. "I think the best idea, is to work on our own for a little while...and then think about joining another herd if we come across one?" she asked.

Galmúr gave a nod to his young friend "Of course, I would not go purposely to seek out a herd, and certainly not right away" he added with a grin over to Artemis, remembering the wild, free feeling that had rushed over them the day before.

Artemis nodded agreeing wholeheartedly with them, she caught Galmúr's grin and knew exactly what he was thinking and, like he, wanted this to last just a little bit longer. Suddenly with a sly glance at both of her friends, she plunged ahead at a sheer gallop, hooves breaking up the rain softened ground, as she quickly pulled ahead them.
