Sugar sniffed and looked back at her mother and father, as they slowly disappeared. When she could no longer run anymore, she slowed to a walk and kept her gaze to the ground, tears falling down her face. "I wanna go back" she said to her friends, Artemis and Galmúr. She looked at each of them before looking back. "Its not fair!" she finally said. "I know...what we did with our last prank...was absolutely horrible...but what gives that lead stallion the right to exile three yearlings who are still living with their parents?" she spat slightly as she remembered the look of anger and fury on the lead stallions face as he told their mothers they were being exiled. Sugar could still see the look of betrayal in her mother and fathers eyes as they were chased out of the herd. That was a gaze that would stick in Sugar's mind for as long as she roamed the earth.

Galmúr thundered forward, his chest heaving as he angrily ran, half blinded with rage and guilt. He was aware of the two fillies on either side of him, their hoofbeats vibrating against the ground in rhythm with his. He did not look back, for he knew if he did, all he would see would be the lead stallions triumphant gaze watching them flee. After some time, he heard the hoofbeats on his right side falter, then slow considerably, and with an effort he restrained himself as well. His deep amber gaze swept over to the dappled gray filly beside him. "We can't go back" he said, in a harsh angry tone. "He didn't care if it was fair or not. We were threatening his authority in the herd." he added, tail thrashing with fury at the idea of a grown stallion being so callous as to exile three yearlings, especially with two of them being fillies. "You can't call them parents, parents wouldn't have done what they did" he added, jaw clenching in anger as he saw his mother's weak helpless form as she feebly pleaded for mercy. And then suddenly, guilt flooded him as he remembered the "prank" they'd pulled. It had been his idea. It was all his fault. A flash of panic struck his heart. They were exiled because of him. If he hadn't told them what he was planning, Artemis and Sugar wouldn't have been exiled along with him. His coat prickled hot and cold as he thought about the terrible consequences to his spontaneous actions. If Artemis and Sugar ever figured out that it was his fault... would either of them ever forgive him?

Artemis did not know what to think. She was sad because she loved her mother, furious because of the injustice of it all, and lastly she felt a numbing fear of the future, but at the same time her fiery spirit was relishing the idea of an adventure. Artemis was glad that she was running so that she did not have to deal with all these conflicting emotions and focus instead on the ground before her. A sudden exclamation from her younger friend startled her from these thoughts. Not fair? That Artemis agreed with wholeheartedly. But go back? She did not really know about that. ''What do we do now?'' she yelled over the pounding of hooves, at no one in particular.

Sugar stopped and looked at her friends. "maybe we just take a break from running and talk about this" Sugar said, as she remembered her mother and fathers faces...although...she could hardly call them mother and father now...they had just allowed her to go, watching her with betrayal in their eyes. "maybe we shouldn't have pulled that last prank" Sugar suddenly said. "That was our worst prank ever....and...that got us exiled" she mumbled. "we'd still be in the herd if..." Sugar stopped. "if we didn't pull pranks"

Galmúr looked over to Artemis, opening his mouth to answer as Sugar spoke. Slowly, he slid to a halt, looking over at the filly as his ears flattened. He didn't want to talk about it. Not at all. As she spoke, he didn't know what to answer. What could he say? The prank was his fault. Actually... most of them were his fault. His jaw clenched as young tears threatened to spill down his cheeks. Suddenly he couldn't handle the guilt welling up inside him. "I'M SORRY. Ok? I'm sorry, both of you. I..I don't know what I was thinking, you two should never have listened to me" he said, turning his head away as the words burst out of him, fear of his two friends exiling him as well after this clutching his heart.

Artemis skidded to a stop, and looked over in surprise at Galmúr's outburst. ''This is not your fault, we had every opportunity not to participate, even to back out. We are in this together and will survive together,'' she said with feeling and believing every word she spoke. ''Now is not the time to dwell upon the past we have to look forward, to the future. Currently we are herdless, out in the open, vulnerable to wolves, bears and the weather, and there is absolutely no water in sight. We have to come up with a plan if we want to survive and we have to follow that plan to keep from despairing.''

Sugar was also surprised at her Galmúr's outburst. She pinned her ears slightly and listened to him. "Galmúr we chose to do these pranks with you, because we care about you" Sugar said. "I promise, we're in this together, we were all exiled together, remember?" she asked him. "Just because of one stupid mistake, doesn't change the fact that our friendship will never die" She said, with a glimmer of hope in her eyes. "And besides, Artemis is right. If we don't stay with each other...who knows what could happen to us." she finally said. "yes...I do miss mo-" she stopped, realizing she couldn't call her parents mother and father...it hurt her heart, but she continued. "yes, I do miss Crystal and Maverick...but that's because i'm the youngest of the three of us...so it's to be expected." she said. "but they didn't stop the lead stallion from exiling us, none of our so called parents did" She said. "and if they were really our parents, or if they really loved us...they would've worked harder than they did to keep us in the herd that we called home for so many months" Sugar said.

Galmúr turned first to Artemis, then Sugar, a thankful smile spreading over his muzzle as tears shone in his amber eyes. "Thank you both, I don't know how you guys put up with me, but i'm grateful that you do" he said, his heart unfreezing as gratefulness beamed through him. What had he done to deserve such loyal friends? Sugar began speaking, her voice sounding more hopeful and much stronger than it had. He was slightly shook as she referred to her parents by their herd names, but with her words he saw the sense in doing so. It detached any familiarity that they may have had with them, making them seem like just another part of that betraying herd. "You're right Sugar, We can never go back, and we have no reason to go back. Staying together we will survive. Besides, I can't think of any other horses i'd rather be exiled with" he said with a warm smile to the two of them before tossing his head, trying to bring some more levity to the little group. "Come on, let's keep going. As Artemis pointed out, this place isn't sheltered, and there isn't any water. Let's at least find somewhere to stay for the night, and then we've got an entire world to discover, and only a lifetime to do it!", his voice getting more energetic as he suddenly reared up and pawed the air, a feeling of freedom as he had never felt before surging through him.

Artemis smiled, and let out a piercing winny for joy as she reared up along side her friends. That sounded more like it, she could feel the power of hope and friendship coursing through her veins, fueling her spirit, and energizing her entire body. She suddenly could no longer deny it, rearing once more she plunged down the hill at full speed, neighing with joy at the feeling of the wind brushing through her long black mane. She knew that they should have been searching for water and shelter, but she could not stop, not yet.

Sugar watched as both her friends reared...but she...well...she didn't. No matter how badly she wanted to go back, she knew she couldn't not ever. But she was missing her mother and father. Slowly, she picked up a gallop and started catching up to her friends, although she could feel a tear fall down her face as she ran beside them. She looked over at Artemis, and nudged her slightly. "do you think we can stop?" she asked. "I need some food" she admitted, as her stomach rumbled loudly. Bending her head, she managed to grab a mouth full of grass as they ran beside each other.

Galmúr let out a challenging neigh before leaping forward after the black Friesian filly, his legs flashing in front of him. The wind rushed past him as he managed to catch up to Artemis, and he could feel his heart pounding, urging him to go faster, go farther. The thrill of the pounding of his friends hooves coursed through him, and he looked over to Artemis with a grin, eyes flashing with eager fire. But when he looked further, he caught a glimpse of Sugar's face. She did not seem to be feeling the same free, daring spirit they were, in fact, she looked frightened, tired, and homesick. The fire of thrill flickered and dimmed as he reluctantly slowed his pace once more. He could see Sugar speaking to Artemis, but the pounding of hooves was too loud for him to catch the words, so he just kept up a rhythmic pace beside the black friesian.

Artemis slowly brought her flying hooves to a halt. She looked back at her younger friend worriedly. Why did she not feel the same adventurous spirit that had so enraptured her and Galmúr? ''Sugar,'' she said, gently nuzzling the smaller filly, ''you alright?''

Sugar sniffled slightly and shook her head. She was a month younger than Artemis, and two and a half months younger than Galmúr. She felt a small tear roll down her face when’s he finally blurted it out. “I miss my mom and dad” she finally said as she pressed her muzzle against Artemis. Obviously, that was normal for her, because Sugar was the youngest of the trio…and obviously she missed her parents.

Galmúr slowed down to a stop beside the two, curving his path so he was on Sugar's other side. He listened with pity to her words. Of course, she was the youngest of them, the absence of her parents would be most severely prominent for the first few weeks most likely. But she would have to learn to not think of them as she was now. They had let her go, as young as she was, and she was better off to forget them as a distant unpleasant memory. The sooner she learned to feel the wild freedom he and Artemis were feeling, the better for her survival. As she pressed into Artemis he came closer, gently pressing against her to show he was there as well. "It's ok to miss them right now, Sugar. We understand" He said softly, glancing over at Artemis, hoping she could understand, or at least pretend to understand, for Sugar's sake.
