Ember gave another slight nod, limping forwards closer to the fence, believing his words now. This stallion, Tempest, he was the only horse she had spent time around in months. And certainly the only that had cared, or had the ability to care. She waited, a feeling she thought she'd lost forever blooming in her heart. Hope. A few moments later she jerked her head up at a sound, then managed to make her nervous body relax as she saw the stallion returning, carrying a branch with three shining apples dangling on her. Her mouth immediately began watering, her eyes hungrily follow the fruit. As soon as he reached his head over, she moved forward to take the branch, moving it to a patch that miraculously was not muddy and setting it down, then diving her mouth down to inhale the first apple, giving a slight sigh of almost sad happiness at the wonderful taste. The other two disappeared in quite the same manner, and finally she raised her head back to Tempest. "Why...Why are you helping me?" she asked suddenly, her thoughts clearer now. Why would he risk potential capture just to help her?

Flicking his ears back and forth, Tempest snorts a bit in amusement, watching as Ember ate the apples....rather quickly. She looked like she hadn't seen a decent meal....in who knows how long. The apples wouldn't be a good substitute for a meal, but they would at least give her some energy. When she spoke to him, she sounded like she was struggling to get a word out, a sign that she was parched. The apples would help with that, since they were still in season, and were full of delicious juice. Waiting for her to finish, he flicks a large fly, that was rest on his back, watching it fall into the grass, before returning his attention to Ember. "Why am I helping you? Because you are my kind. Horses should never live like this. You should be free to do what you want, whenever you want. I understand that some horses seem to enjoy the company of humans, but that is not always the case. And for you, you are suffering.....I can tell. You shouldn't be living this way," He says.

Ember blinked slightly at his response. So honest and simple. And right. Managing to have the brain power, she quietly considered his words, then sighed, moving forward to lean against the fence, her leg trembling tiredly. "Well thank you. Believe me... I do not enjoy it. And I know I shouldn't be, but I do not have a choice." she said quietly, the flame in her eyes dimming, ears flattening as her true life sifted back to her. This was just a momentary lapse of sunshine before the hurricane that would blot out any light.

"If you would like, I can keep you company. Horses are social animals, and they live and interact with each other. For you to be alone, is a cruel thing," Tempest says. Right now, this was probably the only opening that she had, and she looked to be completely deprived of even the most basic of things. The place where she lived was in shambles, her food was garbage, the water.....he hadn't even seen any, and she was completely alone. He couldn't understand how she managed to end up like this. "You don't look like most of the horses that I've seen. Your mane and tail are different......wavy almost," He says, as he looks at her. He knew that there were different types of horses in the world, but she was certainly very different.
Ember looked back up to him, a sudden soft smile lighting her face, warmth seeping into her eyes again. He wanted to stay... just to keep her company? Her eyes glittered slightly with emotion, and she gave a nod "I would like that" she said, an almost wistful tone in her voice at the thought. Conversation. Like a normal horse. At his sudden question she smiled slightly again, although this was shadowed with mild pain. The thought of who she was... who she had been... where she had come from... it was not pleasant. She shifted on her legs again, leaning more against the fence and letting out a slow breath before responding. "I am an Andalusian... or so I've been told." she said, then let out a sudden wheeze, coughing and moving her tongue slightly to attempt and recover the moisture from the juicy fruits she had devoured.

Tempest lets his ears and body relax, so that Ember would know that he was comfortable. He didn't like being so close to a human's home. But Ember needed some form of support. She was starved of far more than just food. She looked like she hadn't had an interaction with another horse....in who knows how long. When she begins to cough and wheeze, his eyes flash a look of concern. "Are you alright? Is there something that I can do?" He asks. She obviously needed water, but what could he do? He didn't have those wretched things....that humans called hands. He couldn't carry water to her, and she seemed to really need water. He couldn't even get the gate open, so that she could leave. "Is there something here, that has water, that I can bring to you?" He asks. While food was necessary, water was a requirement, as there was only so long an animal could go without water. His mother had always told him to prioritize water over food, if it came down to it.
Ember got her breath back and shook her head slightly "I don't think so, I haven't seen a drop of water since the rainfall yesterday morning... or was it the day before?" she trailed off almost wistfully, remembering the stream of water that had seeped through the broken barn's roof. She sighed again, shaking herself away from the memory. "I...I think He was going to bring me some... but he didn't. I don't know" she trailed off with a weak hopeless shake of her head, trying to force herself not to cough again. The more she spoke, the worse her tongue and throat seemed to feel.

Furrowing his brow, Tempest tries to think of something that he could do. "Would you like me to bring you some more apples? It's not water, but the juice from the apples should be good for your mouth and throat," He says. It disgusted him, that Ember didn't have access to fresh, clean water. Every living being in the world was supposed to have that. "If I could get you out of here, I would take you to the river. The water is always clean and it tastes very refreshing. I don't know if living out in the wild would ever interest you at all," He says. He wondered if there was something that he could do......to get her out of this place.
Ember looked at him with hopeful eyes and gave a slight nod "I would so greatly appreciate that" she said quietly, then sighed as he spoke again. For a moment she could almost imagine it, walking out of the pen and over the hill, to the fresh green grass, and a wide crystal clear rolling river... but then it was gone, reality harshly pushing itself into her thoughts. Sadness in her gaze, she looked over to Tempest. "A river..." she sighed again, shaking her head slowly "I have only seen such a thing a few times... I can only imagine how sweet the water must be" she said, her mouth feeling even more dry at the thought. At his last half question she coughed again before answering "I cannot count the times i have dreamed of escaping to the wild. And I even tried a few times. But I can never get far" she said, glancing down at her lamed leg, her mud crusted mane shifting at the movement. The dark hopelessness that had firmly anchored its hold on her the past week, crashed down on her again, and she closed her eyes slightly. "It is of no matter. Tomorrow I am to be sold again, if He can somehow make someone want me" she said in an achingly empty tone.

Eyes widening in alarm, Tempest almost forgets about what Ember had said about the river. He would address that soon, but he wanted to make sure that he had heard her correctly. "He's selling you? Well, I mean, I want you to have a better home. But do you know where you're going?" He asks. If he could intercept that human, maybe he could help her get out. She deserved a much better life than what she had. "I f I could get you out of this place, I would. There is a lot to see out here, no humans, no large metal beasts. It is true, that there are predatory animals out here, but learning to survive is something that is easily taught," He says. It really bothered him, that humans cold just do this to their horses, trading their lives around, as easily as that. He wasn't even sure where she was going to go. He had been told, that some of the captured mustangs, were taken to places where they were killed for their meat, and that in and of itself.....was sickening. He didn't want that end for her. Ember was young and had so much to live for.
Ember looked up slightly at his seemingly very surprised and worried tone. She couldn't help but give a dry snort, although it caused her to cough again. "I have been sold over 6 times" she said, anger seeping into her voice before draining away again, and she shook her head. "I don't... I keep hoping it might be somewhere better, but each place has been worse than the last" she said then sighed, closing her eyes slightly. "I know nothing of the wild, but I do know of humans. And I know that there has to be something better than them, and I am convinced the wild is that better place. But I would never make it far enough" she said, dropping her head down as she spoke quietly. It was the truth, she knew it. No matter how many times she fantasized over escaping, the harsh truth of her condition brought her spinning back out to reality.

"I understand your worries. The wild can be a large, daunting place if you're not familiar with it. But if you had someone who could teach you, survival out here isn't hard. Aside from predators, usually, the biggest tricks come from finding water, learning what food is safe to eat, what to do during the wintertime. But you would be surprised at how fast instinct can come back to you. Every horse that is owned by humans....somewhere down the line, they came from wild horses. The instinct is there, it just takes a bit of prodding for that instinct to come out. There are many horses who have survived for years out here. It would take time and readjustment, but I think that you would be able to do it," Tempest says. He looks over to the direction of the trees. "You said that you wanted more apples, right? I can go and get some more for you," He says.
Ember's ears flicked slightly in interest, but it was more of an interest in the fact that he was speaking to her, other than the actual words he was speaking. What was the point of even listening to such futuristic words, when the gems the wilds had to offer would never be for her? As he offered to get more apples once again, she nodded affirmingly "Thank you... Tempest" she said, using his name after a slight hesitation, waiting until he was gone before sighing, her head drooping again as she replayed his words of the wild in her mind. Did she have that instinct? She couldn't remember ever feeling that instinct. And it was too late for her to ever feel it again if she even had. For as much as she hoped and wished, she could see no path that could lead her to the freedom of the wild.

"You're welcome, Ember. Take some time to rest, and I'll be back with more apples," Tempest says, before he canters off in the direction of the trees. He would probably, this time, make multiple trips to get apples. The more apples that he brought to herm the better. She needed more food and to be hydrated by something. If he couldn't bring water to her, then the juice from fresh fruit would be a decent substitute. When he reaches the trees, he rears up, kicking his front legs, so that he could knock down more pieces of fruit. The smell was sweet and fragrant, a reminder of just how good fresh food was. Every horse should get something like this...not that dry, dury, poor excuse for food. Picking up apples, one by one, he goes back and forth between the paddock and the grove, placing the apples into Ember's paddock.
Ember gave a slight nod, and she did not have to wait long. Soon he returned, and she gratefully took the apple from him, and by the time she had eaten the first, he returned with another. As she chomped down the second in record time, she felt a mild misgiving. Should she wait until he came back, was it rude to eat them all so fast? But she was so hungry... now that she was eating, her stomach was calling for more and more. And so she threw politeness to the wind and focused on receiving and devouring the sweet fruit, each wetting her throat and tongue more and more.
