''True, the nights are only going to get colder after this. Perhaps I should get into town tomorrow morning and find myself one, and maybe a few other odds and ends as well,'' he said as the forest loomed before them, thrusting out its armlike boughs to close them into its dark heart.

"I should probably join you. I need to see about a thicker pair of gloves. This thin one just isn't cutting it in this weather." Cass says. She could mostly ignore the aching, but it was grating. Hopefully better gloves would help.

Lockian shrugged, ''I could get them for you if you wish, I had assumed that you would get settled into your new job,'' he offered. They entered the dim outer reaches of the forest, Lockian started looking around for a good dry log, oak preferably, it burned longer. He continued walking for some time before he found a large dead log, it was half covered in leaves which was what kept it fairly dry from the weather they had had that day.

"If you wouldn't mind, I would really appreciate that." Cass says. Hopefully finding the right size wouldn't be too hard to find. She could probably lend him her current pair if need be so he could check the size. She'd just have to forgo them for one day, which wouldn't be a big deal.

''Sure, I wound not mind a bit'' Lockian said with a smile, he set his foot to the log and swung the hatchet behind his back before giving bringing his arms down over his shoulder to deliver a smashing blow and chop a nick into the wood. He wrenched the iron head out and swung again, this time making a deeper slit into the wood, sending a few splinters flying in different directions.

"Thank you, I definitely appreciate that." Cass says, reaching behind herself to get her axe from the scabbard on her back. She'd get to work on another nearby fallen tree to chop it into firewood, and then she could probably look for some kindling.

Lockian soon got his log chopped up, he brushed his fist across his forehead wiping away the sweat that had begun collecting on his forehead. The work definitely had warmed him up, but now that he had finished the sweat on his body had begun cooling, he looked up to see if Cassidy had finished, she seemed just about done. He started to stack the wood so it would be easier to carry, ''ready,'' he called to Cassidy just as he finished.

Cass nods slightly, picking up the stack of wood she had chopped. "Ready whenever you are" she says. They had a fair bit of wood between the two fallen logs. It would hopefully last a bit.

Lockian hefted up sticks with ease and quickly walked back through the forest with Cassidy, ''this should last us at least a day or two,'' he said, ''unless we weren't planning on burning nights, but it would be rather cold if we didn't,'' he shrugged, ''perhaps we'll get a warm spell, or I should rather say hopefully we get a warm spell,'' he said quickening his step a bit.

"Would be nice, but that seems like wishful thinking. Winter is coming, whether we like it or not. Still... nothing wrong with having some hope I suppose." Cass says, shifting the wood slightly in her arms to better balance it.

“I suppose,” Lockian said slowly. As he walked he surveyed the darkening forest. It seemed pretty quiet, except for the distant howl of a lonely wolf and the gentle padding of some small forest creature on its way to scavenge for what little food it could find in the bleak weather. He blew out a breath and watched it mist slightly before quickly disappearing, the temperatures were definitely dropping as the night approached.

"Where does the time go... sunset already. We must have been out there chopping wood longer than I thought." Cass says. Thankfully they would be inside soon, and they could get a nice blaze going to heat the room. It was far too cold out here for her liking as the temperature began to drop for the night.

Lockian glanced up at as the bright orange sun of winter started its retreat from the world below the western horizon, “yes we have,” he said looking around at the deepening shadow, he laughed, “but it will all be worth it, I can not wait to get back to that warm fire.”

"That warmth will definitely be most welcome. We've got plenty of wood to keep it running, that's for sure." Cass says. They'd have to figure out supper as well. She'd much rather not have to eat in that vast dining hall now. It felt so stuffy in there, and it just didn't feel as though she actually belonged in there. Having a quiet meal in their quarters seemed much more appealing, especially with a roaring fire going in the hearth.

“Let’s hope it will,” Lockian said. The forest was far behind them by now and the castle was approaching quickly as Cassidy and he were making fairly well time. “I wonder if we will have to meet with the lord any more tonight,” he mused. The stars had just begun shining through and because of the clear autumn air, they seemed brighter than ever. Lockian silently perceived a few of the constellations his father had taught to him on their short trading voyages, he was surprised at how many he could identify.
